Space Dandy dvd

Sci-fi comedy anime mix various elements and keep you glued to the screen thanks to a plot easy to understand, funny gags that make you laugh and make you feel relaxed, and, sometimes, even moments that can make you think deeper. Space Dandy is a good example of a sci-fi comedy anime, that maintains its comedy trait all along the line, but is filled with emotional moments here and there as well, just to maintain everything on the right balance and give you the right emotions at the right moment. As the story goes on, Dandy meets a lot of characters and, episode by episode, the plot seems to adapt to different contexts: there's one episode with a scholastic setting, one with a race tournament, one that invokes mecha genre, and so on. Various elements are mixed together, giving birth to a little masterpiece! This list is meant to suggest to you anime that are similar to Space Dandy, the ones that touch the same themes and basically have the same atmosphere, in one way or another. So if you liked it so much that it wasn't enough, and crave for more, don't worry: this list will help you find release!

1. Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop DVD
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 1998 – April 1999 "]

The mature, carefree Spike Spiegel and his pragmatic partner Jet Black, are bounty-hunters. On board of their spaceship – the Bebop – they jump from a planet to another seeking for criminals. During their journey, three other characters join them: an intelligent Welsh Corgi; the sexy swindler Faye Valentine; and the young hacker Radical Edward. While seeing their plans usually end up failing miserably, they all will face their pasts and their traumas. Shinichiro Watanabe directed both Cowboy Bebop and Space Dandy, so it's not strange to see his touch in both anime. It's not a stretch to say that if you liked Space Dandy, you will like Cowboy Bebop for sure, although it has a more serious orientation. Both anime's backgrounds are the same: outer space. Plus, these two stories involve bounty-hunters: while in Cowboy Bebop they try to catch criminals, in Space Dandy they try to catch aliens. What's more, both of them have comedy, action and drama parts as well, all mixed magnificently together. We can guarantee these two anime are somehow siblings!

2. Seihou Bunkyou Outlaw Star (Outlaw Star)

Outlaw Star dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" January 1998 – June 1998 "]

The undisputed protagonist in Seihou Bunkyou Outlaw Star is Gene Starwind. He is a scared-of-the-space bounty-hunter that, together with his skilled partner Jim Hawking, is asked by Hilda – an Outlaw – to be a bodyguard. Sadly, that kind of job turns out to be a crazy escape from the Kei pirates, wanting to catch Hilda for having stolen Melfina, a bio-android girl thanks to whom they can pilot an amazing spaceship: the Outlaw Star. Both Space Dandy and Outlaw Star involve bounty-hunters, and the setting is the space. Sci-fi themes bring both of them action, drama and an adventurous taste. In both series we find a multi-species crew working together to catch aliens in Space Dandy, and to defeat pirates in Outlaw Star. We cannot ignore the strongest point of both series: to entertain their audience with funny comedy moments, and provide some deeper tones when the right time comes. So if you liked Space Dandy, you'll like Outlaw Star without a doubt!

3. Redline

RedLine
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" August 2009 "]

Every five years takes place the biggest and amazing racing tournament of the universe. The place where the tournament takes place, is revealed only few days before its beginning. Our protagonist, JP, wants to participate, but to do so, he has to obtain a good position in a qualification race: the Yellowline. He participates to the Yellowline race, with his yellow racing car, which seems almost out of place when confronted to the other participants' big cars. During the race, he seems to be one step away from the victory, but suddenly something goes wrong! We could start saying that both protagonists, JP and Dandy, resemble each other a lot: they are both laid-back, seeking adventures and their style is eye-catching. Although the main difference is that in Space Dandy, Dandy seeks for aliens and in Redline, JP runs with his race car, the setting is in space. In both of these anime we find a lot of well-made characters, each with his own oddity. Both of them have a similar art style: vibrant colors dominate in a peculiar universe setting. Each seems to invoke the other, and we should not forget the purpose both have in common too: to entertain. They share the same atmosphere, so if you liked Space Dandy's mood, you will love Redline's too!

4. Kekkai Sensen (Blood Blockade Battlefront)

Kekkai Sensen dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2015 – October 2015 "]

This story takes place in Jerusalem's Lot. This is a city risen up on New York's ruins, which was destroyed in one night by the collision of the Earth with Beyond, a place where a lot of strange creatures live. Jerusalem's Lot is now a place where supernatural creatures and humans coexist. The association trying to maintain peace between humans and monsters is called “Libra”, and the boss is Klaus von Reinherz, a lycanthrope. When Leonardo Watch, a kind and quiet boy who received “The Eyes of God” as a power, joins Libra's association, even stranger things start to happen! We can easily see that Kekkai Sensen and Space Dandy share the same over-the-top action sequences, and a setting where human beings work alongside otherworldly creatures. Although Kekkai Sensen shows a deeper plot beneath it – the fact that Leonardo Watch is searching for a way to heal his sister – both anime shows the everyday lives of the characters facing strange creatures. Leonardo Watch, just as Dandy, is constantly broke and has to face the reality of the fact that his job will be constantly spoiled by his side job at Libra. Furthermore, in both these anime the atmosphere is generally lighthearted, but there will be some emotional parts that will warm your hearts up as well. So what are you waiting for? Kekkai Sensen won't disappoint you!

Tsutsui Yukitaka, after finishing school, manages to convince his parents to let him leave alone. When he enters his new apartment, though, a big surprise awaits him: a strange tenant, who asserts to be an alien who lost his memories. This strange tenant is indeed an alien, and his name is Baka Ki El Dogra. He is a prince from El Dogra planet, and is super-intelligent and a prankster with no interest. What Yukitaka and all human beings don't know yet, is that other aliens live hidden and undisturbed on the Earth! Space Dandy and Level E are two amazing sci-fi comedy anime. They both feature aliens and space travel to some extent, although Level E revolves more around the Earth. In both of them we can find a lighthearted atmosphere, gags and jokes brought by the peculiar personalities Dandy and Baka, but on the other hand there are some episodes and some specific parts that hide deeper meanings, or will make you emotional. It's as easy as this: the next step after watching Space Dandy, could be Level E!

6. Gintama

dvd Gintama
[Information episodes=" 201 " aired=" April 2006 – March 2010 "]

The story revolves around Gintoki Sataka. He is a proud samurai in his late twenties, represented as somehow mature and steady, and his way of acting demonstrates his rationality. The feudal Japan where he lives into, has been subjugated by the “Amanto” – aliens – who have prohibited the possession of swords. That's how Gintoki Sataka lost his place as a samurai and ended up constantly broke, trying to survive by doing every kind of job. His helpers are Kagura, a girl belonging to the Amanto race, and Shinpachi Shimura, a young and talented swordman. Both Space Dandy and Gintama are sci-fi comedy anime. Both the main characters are alike: they are adults, but they indulge in their vices. In both anime, aliens are represented with a funny appearance, and of course this matter starts a lot of comedy moments. Both stories are similar as well, since they feature a protagonist who is almost constantly broke and leads a peculiar team: Gintoki tries to do every kind of odd job, while Dandy hunts aliens. Furthermore, the funny atmosphere is sometimes interrupted by emotional moments that, unexpectedly, will make you reconsider some characters. What's left to say? If you liked Space Dandy, you should definitely check Gintama out!

[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Apr 2015 - Jul 2015 "]

Kumiko Oumae has a jaded past with music. After failing to meet the qualifiers in the middle school regional band competition, she swore to never touch her euphonium ever again. Unfortunately for her, the situation and her friends made her join the high school band yet again. Once again, Kumiko must strive for the high school competition and make amends with fellow middle school band member, Reina Kousaka. Hibike was very well received due to its balanced portrayal on the genres of Music, School Life and Slice of Life. If any one of you were ever in the high school band club, you definitely will be able to empathize with the hardship of playing the instrument as a team and struggling to make it into the competition. Hibike does just that for you by painting a realistic look of a band club member and fulfilling the dreams and aspirations of those that did not made it. It shares the same simplicity of daily lives in a music club as HaruChika, although Hibike places more emphasis on woodwind instruments and also less on the mystery

Carefree and somewhat of an airhead, she is unsure of which club to join in high school when she chances upon an advertisement for the Light Music Club. Inspired, she quickly took a liking to the idea, and proceeds to meet with the other club members - Ritsu, Mio and Tsumugi. This easy to watch anime shows the fun that occurs within the Light Music Club! Simple and fun to watch, K-on has a good collection of music, some being very catchy. K-on has a stronger focus on music than HaruChika, but not so much on the mystery. Both share the same developments of a club lacking in members, and then slowly building it up from nothing. K-on was, and perhaps still one of the top high school slice of life anime.

Minimalist and intelligent Houtarou Oreki just want to live a life of simplicity. He tries as much to conserve energy and does as little as he possibly can. Most would call him a boring person, but that is the life he chose. Forced to join the Classics Club, he is often pushed around by Eru Chitanda, an inquisitive girl who loves a good mystery. Much of the days that Oreki will face from now on are of mysteries, mysteries and more mysteries. Hyouka is an anime of short mysteries, such as a missing wallet or the truth to an urban tale. While it may sound mundane and not at all impressive, the anime does a superb job making each of these mysteries as captivating as possible, and the flow of reasoning is easy to grasp. Often occurring during club time, both Hyouka and HaruChika shares the same bits of mystery that occurs at school, with Hyouka purely focused on mystery.

garo dvd

Garo is one of those shows that grabs a hold of you and will not let you go until you have finished the last episode. It’s dark, it’s gory, and it packs a punch. Best of all it doesn’t mind taking a moment to throw in some humor. You can’t really tell how dark something is until there’s light after all. Admittedly there are a couple slow moments, but if you gave up before episode 8, then you need to give it another shot. You missed out on a nice little twist and some great fight scenes. If you finished it, then you are probably craving something that can match this show’s top-notch palette. So it’s time to jump into a list filled with bloody swords and lots of corpses.

1. Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis (Rage of Bahamut: Genesis)

Shingeki no Bahamut dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Oct. 2014 – Dec. 2014 "]

Ages ago the fearsome power of Bahamut threatened the realms of the humans, demons, and gods. In a great battle, which had each race working together, Bahamut was successfully locked away. The key to Bahamut’s imprisonment was then split between the god’s realm and the demon’s realm, but now the key in the god’s realm has been stolen. Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis is an enjoyable romp through a medieval fantasy world that has it all: gods, angels, demons, magic, and, most importantly, dragons. One of the key qualities of the show lies in its back and forth between the protagonist, Favaro, and the man that continuously attempts to capture him, Kaisar. Not only do their escapades provide numerous opportunities for great dialogue, but amazing action as well. The main similarities between these shows are their art styles (especially its inclusion of CG), their pacing for action, and their willingness to include mythological elements. The combination of such aspects allow both shows to capture the viewer’s attention immediately and maintain their interest throughout. As each show was created by Mappa, such parallels should not come as a surprise. There is also quite a bit of government corruption that acts as a major catalyst for the destruction happening in each world.

2.Claymore

Claymore dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Apr. 2007 – Sep. 2007 "]

Have you followed Clare into the depths of humanity’s darkest aspects? If not, then it is about time you familiarize yourself with this anime. Claymore is a dark fantasy series that takes place in a world where yoma, demons that feed on humans, can easily blend into society. In order to protect ordinary humans, Claymores, or half-human half-yoma warriors, constantly put their lives on the line despite being detested by society at large. What drives Clare, a Claymore who is only 1/4 yoma and considered weak among her peers, forward is the focus of this dark tale. This entry shares Garo’s focus on hunting demons and its unflinching gaze at gore. It is one of those shows that does not mind upsetting the stomach of its viewers. However, what’s beautiful about this rather grotesque aspect is that it fits the tone and overall atmosphere of the anime. Rarely does the landscape of a city or a forest or a mountain actually seem bright. Everything always feels like it is cast in shadows, which makes sense in a world where the good guys rarely seem to win. So maybe it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Garo and Claymore share the same head writer, Yasuko Kobayashi, who has penned quite a few dark fantasies. This could explain why revenge plays a massive role in each show. Though Clare didn’t lose a mother, she did lose a mother figure at an extremely young age and her main target is the one responsible, just like Leon. Albeit, Kobayashi was only adapting Claymore from its manga format when she was working on that project. Perhaps one could assume that the impact revenge had in Claymore influenced Kobayashi’s own writing. It could also explain why the nightmarish monsters in both shows are able to adapt and hide in plain sight of humans.

3. Akame ga Kill! (Akame Kill him!)

Wallpaper Akame ga Kill
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Jul. 2014 – Dec. 2014 "]

When a show has each episode titled with “kill” someone, you know you are in for a bloody good treat. Akame ga Kill! does not only meet expectations in this regard, but exceeds them as it portrays a band of assassins, Night Raid, challenge the corrupted government of the Empire. With weapons known as Imperial Arms equipped to each side, no one is safe. However, it is safe to say that few shows have the power to leave you as devastated as this one will. You’re probably seeing a trend that the entries are mainly set in a medieval-type fantasy world where things are not the best. This setting once more allows for a corrupted government to make the good guys seem like public enemy number one. Thus, it is the responsibility and goal of our heroes to take out the reigning government. What’s particularly similar to these two anime is the sense of loss that is inherent within the story, even though they tackle it differently. While the weight of Leon’s mother’s death pervades the beginning atmosphere of Garo, Akame ga Kill cuts deep and with precision that the only way to get over a loss is to start the next episode. They also have comedic relief present in a lot of episodes to keep their audience slightly sane. However, Akame ga Kill! definitely incorporates humor much more heavily, while Garo saves such moments for the lusty and witty German. Plus, there is one shared aspect that you can’t ignore. In each there are god-like armor sets that give characters incredible power and endurance. Though a lot of Akame ga Kill! characters don’t necessarily rely on armor, it’s the protagonist who happens to have the godliest of armors.

4. Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) Season 1

attack on titan dvd2
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Apr. 2013 – Sep. 2013 "]

Humanity has been decimated to the brink of extinction by the appearance of Titans. The human race’s last stronghold is a place guarded by three massive walls that have kept people safe for years. However, when a colossus Titan breaches the outer wall, mayhem ensues. Humankind’s last hope to reclaim the city, if not just to stay alive, are the men and women who comprise the Survey Corps. They are the only ones who have the power and skill to kill the Titans. I’m starting to realize that quite a lot of anime kill off the mother of the protagonist. Nonetheless, both of these shows decided to take it one step further and have a particularly brutal death in store for the loving mother. In Garo, Leon’s mother, Anna, is burned at the stake. In Attack on Titan, Eren’s mother, Carla, is eaten alive. Few shows are willing to be this cruel. However, the graphic death of a mother is not the only analogy between these two shows. Both protagonists share a lot of the same qualities and tendencies. They are short-tempered, driven by revenge, and ridiculously stubborn; which is possibly the most useful trait for each of them. They also have some unique special abilities that allow them to conquer their trials and (Attack on Titan spoiler if you don’t read the manga) were given to them by their parents. Each show also has a very complex governing system that is inherently corrupt and will happily mislead the people to stay in control.

5. Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion)

code geass dvd
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Oct. 2006 – Jul. 2007 "]

Back in 2006, Code Geass blew people away as it set Japan in a futuristic world where it had become a colony, otherwise known as Area 11, to the Britannia Empire. Under Britannia rule, the Japanese, derogatorily called Elevens, had been subjugated and demeaned to the point that rebellious factions began to grow. It is in this environment that an exiled Imperial Price of Britannia, Lelouch, gains the power of Geass and decides to strike back at his royal lineage. I know what you’re thinking. How does a highly-stylized mecha set in a completely different time period have anything in common with Garo? Most will agree that the style of artwork and sequencing of fight scenes have little to nothing in common. It also breaks the medieval fantasy trend we just had going. However, it picks up on a trending plot point in this type of world, which then sets up thematic similarities between the two. Once again, the mother of the protagonist in each was murdered and thus our heroes have spent their lives nursing a grudge while living at the outskirts of society. Pushing Leon and Lelouch forward at the beginning is their desire for revenge. Both also chase this vengeance to the point that their characters lose sight of their morality. Oh, and there’s one more suggestive similarity between the two. They both have names that start with “L”. Coincidence? We think not.

6. Code:Breaker

code breaker dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Oct. 2012 – Dec. 2012 "]

Kinema Citrus’s supernatural shounen, Code:Breaker, follows the assassination work of a government group known as Code Breakers. Its main force is comprised of six highly-skilled fighters with supernatural abilities. During one of his assassinations, Oogami Rei is spotted by the civilian Sakurakouji Sakura. After witnessing the event and meeting Rei in person, Sakura makes it her mission to remove Rei from the path he has been walking for so long. Code:Breaker’s setting doesn’t have much in common with Garo, but its thematic schemes and awesome fight scenes are on point with what Garo has to offer. Both heavily rely on the main character’s personal brand of justice to drive parts of the story forward. It’s also this brand of justice that brings to question their moral compass and defines their one-track attitude towards what must be done. Leon and Rei also happen to share allies who try to resolve the inner conflicts they face. One of the more gratifying aspects of each anime is the heavy action, which is tied to the need for revenge. Although Rei isn’t particularly guided by revenge like Leon is, the idea of getting your due in blood plays a huge role in Code:Breaker’s overriding plot. Few would argue that the consequences and inner decay of revenge act as the primary conflict within each.

Garo Curse of the Flames dvd 02

In the end, all these shows put their protagonists in dire situations that require them to bloody their hands quite a bit. Not only that, but none of them flinch when it comes to showing the darker side of human nature or what color blood is. So if you are ready to take a trip down the darker half of fantasy, then any show on this list will delight. If you have any shows that you feel are worthy of mentioning, then definitely leave a comment. No rom-coms though! This list can have humor and it can have romance, but by no means is it for the faint of heart.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu follows an ex-convict named Yotaro. Hearing the traditional tale 'shinigami' done in 'Rakugo' by a Yakumo Yuurakutei, a master in the Rakugo craft, Yotaro is inspired and seeks to become his apprentice. Rakugo is a type of comedic storytelling where the performer takes on multiple characters and does sort of a one man, comedic monologue. Yotaro narrowly convinces Yakumo and begins to learn the craft and has some talent for performance as well. But Yakumo might have some dealings in his past that are less than savory and his relationship with Konatsu, daughter of his old friend Sukeroku, a fellow Rakugo artist, is highly strained

Joshiraku follows 5 main girls, Kukuru Anrakutei, Tetora Bouhatei, Marii Buratei, Kigurumi Haroukitei and Gankyou Kurrubiyuutei. The girls don't do much but sit down and talk to one another, often having the topics they set up to discuss going wildly off the rails on one tangent or another. Thus there isn't a plot like more traditional narratives and this is essentially a SOL show about girls performing Rakugo. Rakugo isn't portrayed much in anime and Joshiraku is one of the few shows, along with Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu to portray it. But the series feels like all of its dialogue was meant to sort of honor Rakugo as a whole. Character go off on wild tangents, which ends up in all sorts of crazy stories being told by the characters, many of them having sort of a dramatic point underlying it which seems emblematic of Rakugo storytelling. If you like Rakugo, and if you like cute girls doing cute things, definitely watch this show

2. Sakamichi no Apollon (Kids on the Slope)

Sakamichi no Apollon dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Apr 13, 2012 to Jun 29, 2012 "]

Sakamichi no Apollon follows Kaoru Nishimi who recently transferred from Yokosuka all the way to Sasebo in Kyushuu, practically the extreme southwest of the country. Nishimi, quiet, shy and a bit of a bookworm, forms an unlikely friendship with Sentarou Kawabuchi, a boisterous and brash bad boy after the two find out they have an interest in music, with Kaoru taking a love to Sentaro's passion, jazz music. Kaoru also makes friends with, and develops a crush on, Mukae Ritusko, Sentarou's childhood friend.' Sakamichi no Apollon has a special place in my heart and is probably one of the most deeply felt and emotional drama's I've seen in anime. It's similar to Rakugo in a number of ways, the first one is the setting, they're set in a similar time period, Sakamichi in the late 60's and Rakugo in the early-mid 70's. They also feature characters whose passion is a performance art, and in both series the reason they're drawn to perform often relates to their underlying personality or because it relieves a certain negative emotion or stress that pervades there lie

3. Hyouge Mono

Hyouge Mono dvd
[Information episodes=" 39 " aired=" Apr 7, 2011 to Jan 26, 2012 "]

Hyouge Mono follows Sasuke Furuta, a daimyo and vassal to Oda Nobunaga, one of the most influential persons during Sengoku Jidai, Japan's warring states era. Sasuke is a man dedicated to art and beauty and some of the more aesthetic pursuits in life. Despite focusing on Sengoku Jidai and featuring huge historical figures like Tadakatsu Honda, Masamune Data or Ieyasu Tokugawa, the series does not follow the wars of the time and instead is a character driven show, based on the relationship of characters to tea ceremony and it's importance to the social life of Japanese feudal lords. Hyouge Mono and Rakugo are both period pieces that really focus on the atmosphere of the setting. Hyouge Mono for example focuses on Sengoku Jidai, but on an atypical part of Japanese history when that's typically depicted in media about the era. Rakugo and Tea ceremony are both interesting parts of the Japanese cultural and artistic tradition, and seeing well-written characters and their relationship with the artform and with each other is definitely a treat

4. Chihayafuru

dvd Chihayafuru
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Oct 5, 2011 to Mar 28, 2012 "]

Chihayafuru follows Chihaya Ayase, a cheerful and forward girl who develops a passion for Karuta, a card game based on Japanese poetry. She grew up playing with her two friends Arata Wataya, who introduced her to the game as well as Taichi Mashima who is another one of Chihaya's childhood friends. The two part ways in their adolescence and due to circumstances, end their partnerships. But when they all meet together again in High School, things change. One the surface it's easy to see the similarities with Rakugo, they're both josei series around a somewhat obscure and somewhat antiquated piece of Japanese culture. But Karuta is a game, not a performance art and that's one of the parts of Chiyafuru that make it unique. The actual matches are very intense, and almost unfold in the way a sports anime does. But it's very similar to Rakugo in the way the characters relate to the game, and all of the main characters are well written and well developed.

5. Barakamon

Barakamon dvd

Seishuu Handa is a calligrapher, he's good looking, confident and skilled... maybe a little too confident. Seishuu get's a bad remark from a well respected calligrapher and blows up on him, which leads to Seishuu's father punishing him by sending to live in the Goto Islands, far from Seishuu's comfortable and urbane living in Tokyo. But rural living, and rural neighbors can be as colorful as anything you'd find in the city, and Seishuu's art starts to thrive through his relationships on the Island. Barakamon is another anime about an artform and a character trying to excel at it. Barakamon, compared to Rakugo is more comedic and almost slice of life at times, but definitely touches similar nerves as rakugo in terms of the characters it presents. It has the depth of characterization that becomes the overarching plot which is a hallmark of great slice of life shows, and definitely merits a try by everyone

Akitsu Masanosuke is a ronin but he's timid and unable to really stand up for himself. This leads him to losing a variety of bodyguard jobs and forces him into manual labor for money. Eventually he becomes a bodyguard for Yaichi, the byronic leader of a gang called the 'five leaves.' Yaichi sees something in Masanosuke, who he calls Masa, beyond his timid appearance. And the more Masa learns about Yaichi, the more he's intrigued. House of Five leaves is another great drama series with complex characters and webs of motivation that are slowly untangled episode after episode. It has a somewhat less lively feeling it than rakugo, feeling sobering and almost dream-like in comparison but this definitely adds to the appeal of the series. House of 5 leaves is also a period piece, set in Edo in the 17th century, but features a part of life you don't see typically depicted during the time period.

Golden Boy dvd

There’s a reason why they say laughter is the best medicine. It’s fun, it’s free and it works! Whether we’re sick with the flu or just plain feeling blue, there is nothing like a good comedy to make us forget all of life’s problems. And what makes us laugh more than nonstop slapstick humour, lecherous behaviour and sexual innuendos? There are two things to take away after watching Golden Boy:

  • Perverse, confident male characters are not always cliché and eye roll worthy, but actually likeable.
  • Older anime can still be entertaining.
This anime is over 20 years old, yet it has stood the test of time to deliver and experience that still feels contemporary. Overall, the combination of the lewd dialogue, well-aged animation and spot-on voice acting (some may say the dub is better!) made Golden Boy a must-see, ecchi classic. While the title is intended to describe the main character, I think “golden” better describes what happens in a particular scene rather than Kintarou. You perverts know what I’m talking about. Lol. Fortunately for us, there is way more where that came from. Here are 6 other rude and crude anime for you to laugh your woes away to:

1. Junk Boy

Junk Boy dvd
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" December 1987 "]

Like every other 23 year old, Ryohei Yamazaki is always thinking about sex. Well, I guess sex is really on the mind of every young male, regardless of age. Heck, guys in general are pretty much always thinking about sex. Men love sex. Anyways, Junk Boy follows our dim-witted, womanizing friend as he triumphantly seduces woman after woman in his quest for sexual fulfillment. Unfortunately for him, Ryohei is also very picky. Despite having ladies left, right, and center, none of them meet the ideals of a woman that he truly yearns for. The similarities between Junk Boy and Golden Boy are undeniable; I mean, look at their titles. Pushing the nonsensical similarities aside, we are left with two anime whose main characters are both obsessed with female attention. While we are aware of Kintarou’s successes as a student, Ryohei unfortunately does not have many talents to speak of besides his art of seduction. In both cases however, they each fall short of utilizing their full potential. From the characters, the aged animation and the same lechery-induced laughs; Junk Boy and Golden Boy are cut from the same cloth.

2. High School DxD

highschool dxd dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2012 – March 2012 "]

As one might assume, High School DxD features the everyday life of the students at Kuoh Academy. Living alongside the students however, is an indiscernible amount of angels, fallen angels and devils posed as ordinary humans. Of course, the lecherous ways of our main character, Issei Hyoudou, somehow attracts the attention of Yuma Amano. The only downside is that Yuma is actually a fallen angel and tries to kill our young hero. Fortunately, all turns out well when Issei is successfully revived back to life by a devil in exchange for becoming a servant to said devil. Sounds like high school. High School DxD has a more concrete plotline, yet, contains all the perversion and hilarity found in Golden Boy. Furthermore, the similarities between the main characters are also very substantial. Issei and Kintarou both exhibit deviant behaviour that hinders them from using their full potential academically. Overall, the sheer amount of fan service and hilarity within High School DxD makes it a must-see for fans of Golden Boy.

3. Green Green

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2003 – September 2003 "]

What happens when legions of isolated, high school boys are all of a sudden introduced to legions of high school girls? Chaos ensues. Green Green tells the story of Yuusuke Takazaki and his trio of lecher roommates as they try to cope with the greatly appreciated change of becoming co-ed. Just as his roommates are getting ready to woo the ladies, Yuusuke finds himself not needing to. Midori Chitose is a new student who, upon her arrival, is already in love with and willing to do anything for Yuusuke. Unable to recall ever meeting her in the past, the story unfolds as he slowly recovers his memories. Green Green contains the same levels of crude jokes and fan service that made Golden Boy so great. Yuusuke is quite different from Kintarou – he is younger, a bit average and isn’t as much of a lecher. In fact, Kintarou shares more in common with Yuusuke’s roommates rather than himself. However, the humor remains the same. If you like the absurd and funny yet sometimes inappropriate, look no further than Green Green.

Sora no Otoshimono dvd
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" October 2009 – December 2009 "]

What do you picture when you hear the word, angel? If you think short, inappropriately dressed and voluptuous females, then you’re either the creator of Heaven’s Lost Property or very confused. You can find Tomoki Sakurai doing one of two things; he’s either busy being a pervert, or suffering from a recurring dream he’s had since he was a child. So you can imagine his surprise one night when an angel from the world known as Synapse spontaneously falls from the sky. Declaring him master, the story unfolds as Tomoki helps his new servant, Ikaros, and the rest of her Angeloid friends. Heaven’s Lost Property combines the comedy, ecchi and sci-fi genres into a finished product that is easy to fall in love with. While the supernatural beings and situations stray away from the real-life settings seen in Golden Boy, the comedy and substantial moments of fan service more than make up for it. Both main characters exhibit the same lust for female attention, wanted or unwanted. This makes for a series that is both fun and exciting for fans who want a taste of action with a hint of Golden Boy

5. Colorful

Colorful is short and sweet. No really, the episodes are less than ten minutes and are chocked full with fan service that make you wish they were just a little bit longer. The episodes are disjointed, with only a few characters making more than one appearance. As such, there’s no story to speak of. Instead, Colorful presents us with an eclectic handful of men who share the same interests of perversions, voyeurism and debauchery. Follow them as they attempt and undoubtedly fail to catch a glimpse of what women want to keep hidden. If you watch Golden Boy without knowing what Golden Boy is beforehand, you can easily mistake it for Colorful. Take any perverted situation Kintarou found himself in, edit it down to around 6 minutes, and you’ll have yourself additional episodes of this concise yet hilarious anime. If you want the essence of Golden Boy without the frivolous plot, Colorful delivers.

6. Great Teacher Onizuka

Great Teacher Onizuka gto DVD
[Information episodes=" 43 " aired=" June 1999 – September 2000 "]

Great Teacher Onizuka is 50 percent comedy, 50 percent drama, but 100 percent fun and nonsensical. Eikichi Onizuka is a former gang member, currently jobless and always on the prowl for women. During one of his mall escapades to sneak a few peeks at unsuspecting girls, he somehow manages to secure a date. Of course, it doesn’t end well. Onizuka is stood up when her boyfriend, who also happens to be her teacher, convinces her to return to him with little to no persistence. Thus, the impractical idea to become a teacher for the sole purpose of meeting women was born. His first class; just a handful of the most ill-behaved teenagers in Tokyo. Fortunately, Onizuka holds himself above the law, and he is willing to break any and every rule to get them under his control. Nothing is going to stop Onizuka from becoming the world’s greatest teacher. You can’t watch Golden Boy and not watch Great Teacher Onizuka. It’s just as illegal as the methods Onizuka uses in the classroom. There are several reasons why these two anime should be viewed in tandem with one another – from their tones, their art styles and even the main characters themselves. Kintarou and Onizuka are both young, lecherous freeters whose actions always get them into trouble. Despite this, they both have the potential for greatness – something that comes to fruition throughout the length of each series. If you’re looking for anime comedy gold, you’ll find Great Teacher Onizuka at the end of the rainbow.

Strawberry Panic dvd

Everytime Strawberry is in a title, it’s fair game to assume that there will be some scandalous situations and…ahem…unique camera angles. Strawberry Panic definitely doesn’t disappoint in that department, but it’s more than a little peep show. Rather than a focus on antics, Strawberry Panic takes a lot of cues from its more dramatic ancestors. A little shout out is due for Kannazuki no Miko that didn’t quite make the cut as such a list deserves as many contemporaries as possible. Primarily focused on Aoi Nagisa as she enters a new school and finds herself in the midst of several intimate and complex relationships at the three all-girl Catholic schools built on Astrea Hill. Things are never simple in high school, but Nagisa’s troubles are doubled when Shizuma Hanazono, the sole Etoile (student representative of the three schools) of Astraea Hill, finds herself drawn to Nagisa. With school, clubs, and love in the air there is quite a bit of drama, romance, and laughter filling this series.

1. Sakura Trick

Sakura Trick dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jan. 2014 – Mar. 2014 "]

Sakura Trick is first and foremost about the relationship between Haruka and Yuu, two best friends that are embarking into high school life. Immediately Haruka, who has deep feelings for Yuu and is a yuri fangirl, becomes concerned that two will move on quickly from one another as they sit apart. To share something special, which won’t be replicated in any of their other relationship between them, they share a kiss. From that point the show covers the increasing intimacy of their relationship as well as the other relationships in their group of friends. Sharing the common thread of school-life yuri, both shows enjoy a mixture of relationships and off-beat interactions to lighten the mood. It is always enjoyable when a show does a good job maintaining relationships outside of the core two. However, while Sakura Trick clearly keeps the line between friend and lover strict, Strawberry Panic does show off a little harem-like vibe. To offset this quality, it also takes a more in-depth time portraying each character’s feeling. That’s not to say that Sakura Trick doesn’t portray their characters well. Sakura Trick simply has less characters and less inherent drama, which explains the 12-episode story. Strawberry Panic and Sakura Trick are both also able to maintain a sense of seriousness as most characters struggle with their relationship decisions. In truth each show is mainly focused about maintaining relationships and individual growth. For example, at the beginning of Strawberry Panic, Nagisa is simply confused and bouncing back and forth without any real personal desire, but becomes much more certain throughout. Yuu, in Sakura Trick, learns to express her desires more clearly as well. The biggest difference is the overall sense of lightness that pervades Sakura Trick due to its over-the-top expressions and situations.

2. Maria-sama ga Miteru (Maria Watches Over Us)

Maria-sama ga Miteru dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Jan. 2004 – Apr. 2004 "]

So this is a classic, but it’s possibly the most similar show to Strawberry Panic both in this list and out of all the classic yuri dramas. That’s why Kannazuki no Miko received a shout out and this one was included. Let’s just take a look at the premise to point out some similarities. The main character Yumi Fukuzawa has just entered an all-girls Catholic school, Lillian Girls’ Academy, and has caught the eye of the most popular girl, Sachiko Ogasawara. Once again the hardships of attending high school are increased as Sachiko’s displays of interest have everyone looking at Yumi. Sounds familiar right? Well, not only is the premise similar, but so is the execution. These shows each unveil a much more dramatic and heartfelt side to the relationships that are being portrayed. Though both do have lighthearted moments, these are the type of shows that will depict a blush rather than a nosebleed, and that says quite a lot about the direction and guiding principle of the shows. Also, both have a slightly slower pace compared to a lot of recent anime. Fair warning though, Maria Watches Over Us is particularly slow. The title, Maria Watches Over Us, really says it all. It’s extremely innocent and caring with most of the yuri aspects taken through subtext rather than any physical intimacy. Strawberry Panic, on the other hand, is a little more sex-fueled and rambunctious. The real special relationship between these two is that you can feel how Maria Watches Over Us acted as a stepping stone for something like Strawberry Panic.

3. Yuru Yuri (YuruYuri: Happy Go Lily)

Yuru Yuri San Hai dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jul. 2011 – Sep. 2011 "]

Yuru Yuri officially stole hearts when it debuted back in 2011. People just could not resist the adorable and ridiculous nature of the show’s main cast. Everyone simply fell in love instantly as they watched Akari Akaza, a first-year middle school student, reunite with her elementary school friends by joining the “Amusement Club” at an all-girls school. Let the amusement ensue, as this club goes episode-to-episode with some crazy antics. However, it’s the use of such crazy moments that allow it to draw so many ties with Strawberry Panic. This is because the Doga Kobo uses these crazy situations to ingrain each character’s personality. Thus, despite a reliance on comedy, Yuru Yuri will get you attached to a character and their particular struggles, just as much as Strawberry Panic. Include with that the familiar premises of an all-girl school and multiple relationships and you’ve practically got the same show. Alright, so they are not that closely related, but both definitely show the importance of friendship as well as love in self-development. Basically, at the core of each show, there is a testament to the impact that school relationships will have on a person’s personal growth. Yuru Yuri and Strawberry Panic just deal with those moments that build relationships and self-confidence in different styles. Both can easily be enjoyed, but it requires the viewer to have some idea of what’s going to be shown.

4. Maria†Holic

Maria Holic dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jan. 2009 – Mar. 2009 "]

This 2009 shoujo ai/comedy series was one of the first to put a delightful twist on its more drama-infused predecessors. It follows the school life of Kanako who decided that she must attend an all-girls Catholic school in order to end up with her dream girl. Well, public school might have been easier as she not only catches the attention of the most popular girl in school, bringing with it the wrath of a lot of girls; but also has a sadistic roommate who happens to be a guy in drag and a cat-eared dorm leader. The amount of subplots and unending torment for Kanako will leave you in stitches. One issue must be addressed before all others. Apparently, the best way for a girl to get a girlfriend is to go to an all-girls Catholic school. Is this true? This list insinuates such reasoning as once again the setting for this yuri tale is that exact type of location. Nonetheless, the backdrop is not the only similarity between these two. Both rely heavily on the conflict that surrounds becoming the center of attention due to the adoration of a senpai. In doing so both shows depend on the protagonist’s inability to properly function in relationships at the very beginning. Another likeness between Maria†Holic and Strawberry Panic is the host wide array of side characters. In each anime, these side characters not only provide some tension relief, but act as foils to better comprehend the emotions and struggles of other characters. Either way, the amount of possible pairings give fans quite a few opportunities to ship couples or scream at character choices that don’t seem to follow suit.

5. Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san

Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Apr. 2014 – Jun. 2014 "]

Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san is another school life yuri that focuses 100% of its time on the relationships between yuri couples. It’s fun, it’s fast, and it doesn’t hold back as it primarily follows the ins-and-outs of the relationship between Inugami Yachiyo (a girl with the inherent qualities of a dog) and Nekoyama Suzu(a girl with the inherent characteristics of a cat). How this relationship works is that each character enjoys the qualities of the other so much more that they can’t help but fall in love. As to why their attractions happen to go against all reason, Yachiyo says it best when she declares that she is a “super masochist”. The parallels between these shows are pretty clear from the get go. They focus on school relationships, they have comedy, and they obviously have yuri. The most important aspect that is shared between the two is that neither turn their eyes from possible yuri content. This focus is truly important as many anime don’t quite include such relationships, or if they do it’s heavily through subtext. Thus, in premise the two shows are very much alike. However, Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san handles itself way differently from Strawberry Panic. It’s short, with each episode running just over 3 minutes, and thus its style is inherently different. There is not time for drawn out thoughts and no time for prolonged drama. The characters’ personalities do get some screen time, but they are rather static, and this works. Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san’s main goal is to make you laugh and in this it succeeds tremendously.

6. Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku (Mikagura School Suite)

Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku dvd
[Information episodes=" 6 " aired=" Apr. 2015 – Jun. 2015 "]

From the great minds at Doga Kobo, Mikagura School Suite is a fun, fantasy fueled jump into high school life. Following the protagonist, Eruna Ichinomiya, Mikagura School Suite takes us into a high school where there are only cultural clubs. However, that’s not the only thing that sets this high school apart from most others. The students each have magical powers that generally have a relationship with the type of club they are in. It’s very much 2015’s Baka and Test, but with some interesting twists. There is no doubt that Mikagura School Suite diverges from the rest of the list as yuri relationships are simply not the primary focus of the show. However, as a school anime, it still relies heavily on the relationships between the students, whether male or female, to progress the plot. Plus, our protagonist, Eruna, is a boisterous girl who fantasizes nonstop about having a relationship with other girls. Daydreams are a constant through the whole plot and it’s her desire to be close to her senpai that drives her forward. In other words, yuri fans will definitely get a heaping side of what they are looking for as they sit back and watch people engage in epic battles. There’s also one more particular interesting trait between the two protagonists. It’s not entirely unique, but both clearly state in the first episode an admiration for their school’s uniform.

But then, wait a minute, is that a plotline behind the depravity and it’s leading us somewhere? Yes, you read well, this hentai anime has a plot, a very obscene and interesting one. The main characters have a back story, and every h-scene has a causality and an effect, maybe not all of them, but it’s a plus that adds more excitement and anticipation. Black Gate dvd
[Information episodes=" 2 " aired=" Jul 25, 2004 - Dec 25, 2004 "]

This time it’s not a bible, it’s a gate, full of shocking mysteries. This anime starts off with a cute couple, Narifumi and Shizuku, making sweet love in the classroom. Then it gets steamy in the school roof, with a yuri sexy scene in the sultry sunlight. Later, Shizuku, carrying a giant sword steps naked into a temple and starts a black magic ritual that opens a gate, and she is transported to an alternate world. Fiery female students and a teacher are the protectors of this interdimensional door called, Black Gate. All of them re-open the passage and by accident, Narifumi gets sucked in, finding himself on the other side with the girls surrounded by demons. This anime shares a similar art and design as Bible Black. Both have stories dealing with black magic and lust for power. Black Gate has plenty of sizzling and wet, girl on girl action, but cuter than in Bible Black. Also, in both shows, we have the super hot teacher involved in an occult. Because the female lead is seeking power, she gives herself to atrocious demons. The thing here is, that the h-scenes are not as violent or bloody as they are in Bible Black. Not even the sex scenes with the enormous hard demons, if violent and bloody h-scenes with monsters is one of your fantasies, let me warn you that the demons in this show are gentle beasts. Black Gate has an intricate plot as well, but is very easy to watch. You will enjoy this hentai anime if you prefer softcore, lovey-dovey yuri, and a hentai with a dark and serious premise.

2. Discipline (Discipline: The Hentai Academy)

discipline dvd
[Information episodes=" 6 " aired=" Apr 11, 2003 - Dec 17, 2004 "]

If you’re not interested into occult paraphernalia, but you loved Bible Black’s disciplinary methods, hold onto your seat and take a look to this masterpiece. Takuro is a boy who transfers to a former all-female academy where the female students get super excited with the new addition to the school, welcoming him with odd handshakes and jiggling boobs, it’s likely they all want to have a piece of the only boy in the school dorm. Takuro seems like a normal student, and he feels this is heaven, but as he engages in sex with girls lining up in his room, waiting impatiently for their turn, it is revealed that he possesses a secret which becomes the focus of the school battle for sexual domination. This is how he is forced to participate in a secret social group that conducts all of our favorite lewd activities. Here Takuro the victim of bondage, long hours of sex with a small army of teenage sadistic girls, and lots of licking. How awful!... and delicious. Discipline was created by the same production company as Bible Black, therefore shares the same general animation style of it. Also, both shows are based off a game made by the same team of creators. Discipline and Bible Black are hentai series with a combination of Action, Mystery, and the pursuit for sexual power and subjugation. If you like your pathetic boy tied down in a way that you have total control of his… limbs, go watch this. Or if you are a masochistic boy who would love to be tortured by hot mistresses, this is the hentai for you, too.

3. Koutetsu no Majo Annerose (Witch of Steel: Annerose)

Koutetsu no Majo Annerose dvd
[Information episodes=" 4 " aired=" Jul 27, 2012 - Nov 21, 2014 "]

Now we are finally out of school and in a city with this next hentai anime. In the dismal and abandoned district of Tokyo called Amidahara, Miki, wearing a sexy school uniform, enters a bar filled with dangerous looking men. No, she is not looking for ‘that’! At least not yet. She’s looking for Annerose, a private detective that can help her find her missing brother, but instead she met with Annerose’s brother, who after checking out Miki´s well endowed rack, decided to help her find her brother. This Hentai show contains a pleasing and fluid animation, the characters are aesthetically balanced, the body proportions of the girls are not humongous, but still big and sexy. One of my favorite looking characters is one dark skinned goddess who appears throughout most of the mind breaking scenes. Similar to Bible Black, this is a very violent anime that has it all: vore scenes, sleeping h-scenes, bondage, defloration, and ogre depredation. The male lead is transformed into some sort of a zombie beast as sexual mayhem is liberated. Ah yeah... and there is a mystery to resolve.

4. Pandra The Animation: Shiroki Yokubou Kuro no Kibou

Pandra The Animation wallpaper
[Information episodes=" 2 " aired=" Apr 25, 2014 - Aug 29, 2014 "]

Back to school, the city can be too chaotic for some of us. This next hentai anime has a small storyline, but it is a very exciting one. The lead female character finds Pandora's Box hidden within the school grounds. This box opens up a world of evil, and now she has to put up with the horrific consequences. The girls in this show appeals to lolicon fans, as they all act and look softer. But the h-scenes are not as soft; tentacles, gangbang,... monster girls with tentacles, a humongous sullen demon nailing a little girl, futanari, you name it. Also, this show has extreme internal shots of the large insertions. Pandra shares with Bible Black the idea of girls growing dicks and raping other girls. And the premise that, once you discover what it’s like on the dark side, there is a high price to pay. Even though the storyline in this show is more simple than in Bible Black, the terrifying scenes from both series are going to stick in your mind for a while, or making your undergarments sticky.

5. Hotaruko (Crimson Climax)

Hotaruko dvd
[Information episodes=" 3 " aired=" Feb 21, 2003 - Sep 25, 2003 "]

The three previous shows were not as hardcore as you wanted them to be? Don't walk away!, there’re still two more hentai anime on this list that might bring you gratification. Ryou arrives to an isolated island in order to find out the causes of her mother's disappearance. There, she finds horror and a carnal cult in which cursed victims are dragged into pleasure, and brutally sacrificed in a bloody ritual. Will Ryou be able to escape this hell alive, and with her virtue intact? Well, you know she won’t, this is a hentai show we are talking about. This show has the best animation ever, with a mix of bright and pale colors keeping intact a dismal ambiance. Just as in Bible Black, the sex scenes are filled with gore and violence. Also, both hentai anime tell a story about heresy and normal people being corrupted by darkness. Hotaruko has a complicated incest plot, and it gets confusing at the end. Other than this argument, we selected this show because of the h-scenes, which are very grotesque and mind bending; as it contains mannequins and doll demons feasting on every female on the island.

6. Euphoria

Euphoria dvd
[Information episodes=" 6 " aired=" Dec 11, 2011 - Feb 26, 2016 "]

Congratulations! You’ve reached our final recommendation. Did you get your fill with the previous shows? Well, the final one is a hentai show that just finished airing, and is the most deviant and perverted in our list. Second year high school student, Takato Keisuke, wakes up in a white room with 5 classmates and a teacher, all females. None of them can remember how they got there. A voice tells the only male in the room that to escape from this place, he has to play the role of the key, while the girls are the keyholes. At the beginning we can sense the fear of all the characters being trap in this bizarre situation, but later they all get into it in their own way. It’s especially interesting to see that the girls have different personalities, from the innocent childhood friend, to the psycho girl that plays mind games with Takato. As in Bible Black, this anime has a heavy shocking plot. One male student, being trapped in a situation he has no control of, but still he enjoys all the sex. There is also a female teacher, and mysteries behind each character. If you are seeking for extreme sexual stimulation, you might find it here. This is a hardcore hentai anime that combines all the gross and nasty, favorite fetishes, mixed together in one intense erotic film; BDSM, electrocution, rape, impregnation, guro, scatology, and a… decapitation. You're welcome.

Bible Black is one of the most well known hentai ever created. Most of the hentai anime shows with a serious plot are always compared to Bible Black, but not many can emulate its graphical erotic plot. Still we managed to find 6 great hentai anime that share common elements or themes with Bible Black. This list is arranged in a way for you to enjoy by starting with recommendation number one, Black Gate, which is the softer hentai anime on this list, and then gradually level up into more hardcore sex scenes until you finally end up watching the most disturbing fetishes condensed in one hentai show, Euphoria. What do you think about this list? Do you think these shows are in some way similar to Bible Black? Would you recommend other titles that are as good as Bible Black which you think we’d definitely enjoy? Just splatter it on the comments below.

1. Arakawa Under the Bridge

Arakawa Under the Bridge dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 2010 - June 2010 "]

First up is a show that just has to be mentioned when talking about crazy, over-the-top stories. Arakawa Under the Bridge is your not-so-average love story. It all starts with Ichinomiya Kyo, prospective president of a highly successful company, almost drowning after falling off a bridge and having to ask a passing girl for help. Because of his life motto to never be indebted to anyone he is ready to do anything to make it up to the girl called Nino. As it turns out, she lives underneath the bridge, claims to be an alien from Venus and wants him to experience love with her. Get ready to pay your debt back, Kyo! Arakawa Under the Bridge is as much a romance anime as Sekkou Boys is an idol anime. They are both setting up a “normal” storyline, only to turn everything upside down with their main cast. Speaking of them, both shows have characters that get more than just a few laughs with their weird personalities. If you are looking for an adventure you won’t forget, give this show a try.

2. Thermae Romae

Our next recommendation is as unknown as it is entertaining. It’s time for Thermae Romae! As you might have already guessed from the title, this anime revolves around ancient Roman bathhouses and one guy who loves them more than anyone else: Lucius. He is an architect for public bathhouses and is always ready to improve his skills. Lucky enough, he gets to time-travel to modern day Japan and experience their bathhouse culture first hand. This recommendation goes out to everyone who loves the combination of ancient Roman history with Japanese anime. Even though this show only has a couple of episodes to offer it is still entertaining and definitely worth a try, just like Sekkou Boys. These shows are not afraid to stand out and that’s why you should check them out.

3. Miss Monochrome: The Animation

[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" October 2013 - December 2013 "]

Let’s bring this list back to the realm of idol shows, and what anime would be more suited for that than Miss Monochrome? Miss Monochrome started out as an original character design for a 3D virtual singer. The girl that loves everything monochrome and despises color quickly gained popularity and after countless merchandise has now made the jump to Japanese TVs. This anime consists of episodes that are only four minutes long and will guide you into the black-and-white world of Miss Monochrome. Not only does this show revolve around singing idols, but it will give you the same “what did I just watch” feeling like Sekkou Boys. Since each episode is so short, the producers didn’t waste time to come up with a deep or touching storyline. Instead, you will get lots of random moments with fantastic humor. Give this charming girl a try; I am sure you won’t be disappointed.

Fans of Japan will already know him and everyone else, allow me to introduce you to Osomatsu-san. The original story of Osomatsu-san or rather Osomatsu-kun was first published in the 1960s and became one of the most well-known stories in Japan. Just like the manga, the newest anime adaptation revolves around the everyday life of the Matsuno siblings, six brothers who look identical but greatly differ in their personalities. This show will make you laugh like no other! Osomatsu-san is great when it comes to sustaining a story with amazing characters. These boys don’t go on a great adventure, but their weird personalities and the way they interact with each other are entertaining enough to make this anime worthwhile. If you like the randomness and humor of this show, chances are you will also enjoy Sekkou Boys.

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2012 - March 2012 "]

You cannot get enough of boys facing their everyday challenges? Don’t worry; we have another great recommendation with Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou. The name says it all. Daily Lives of High School Boys will introduce you to three students at an all-boys academy who just cannot wait to grow up. They are at that age where they have to face all the struggles of everyday life including love, hobbies, sports and friends, while still finding a way to study and succeed at school. No wonder that these boys seem to slowly lose their minds. This anime is simply hilarious. Not because of its setup which could easily be a common Slice of Life shows, but because of all the random jokes and situations that the boys are thrown into. Sekkou Boys and Daily Lives of High School Boys both revolve around - you name it - boys, but show them in two completely different situations. What remains the same though is the way they interact with each other and all the hilarious jokes you can get out of their encounters.

6. Show by Rock!!

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2015 - June 2015 "]

Last but not least we have another show revolving around music and crazy characters. Welcome to MIDICITY, capital of the music industry. Here you will meet a girl group that consists of more than unique characters. We have Cyan, a kitty girl with lolita fashion, rabbit girl Chuchu, dog girl Retoree and of course an alien sheep named Moa. Can this girl band beat their opponents and make their way to the top of the music industry? A boy band with stone busts or a girl band with animal characters - you choose which idea is the crazier one. Fact is, both shows don’t take the idol and music genre too serious and that is what makes them so charming. You still get to enjoy music and the struggles of working in the music industry, but at the same time there is this weirdness factor that makes both shows so much more entertaining. Our final recommendation!

The Irregular at Magic High School dvd

Sci-fi anime, mixed with magic elements and a bit of school setting, can give birth to little masterpieces that leave you speechless. It's the case of Mahouka Koukou No Rettousei. Born as a light novel from Tsutomu Satou's pen and adapted into an anime in 2014, it has amazing action moments, the right amount of sci-fi, magic elements, fights among magicians, a harem of beautiful girls, politic plot and a deep bond between a brother and a sister. When an anime touches so many contexts, and still manages to develop everything in the right way, keeping you glued to the screen, it has to be considered a masterpiece! Tatsuya Shiba, and his sister Miyuki enter the Magic High School: Tatsuya ends up in the “weed” class, which is the low-ranked one, while his sister ends up in the “bloom” class, which is the high-ranked one. We all loved the way Tatsuya managed to demonstrate to everyone his worth, in spite being a “weed”! Sadly, 26 episodes can be a very short time when you enjoy watching anime too much, so we are sure you all finished watching Mahouka Koukou craving for more! Don't worry, we created this list to help you find relief, and enjoy once again all the aspects you loved in it!

1. Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry (Chivalry of a Failed Knight)

dvd Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2015 – December 2015 "]

Ikki Kurogane attends Hagun Academy, in order to become a real Mage-Knight. The problem, though, is that he is only an F-rank, and being his magical power very low he is called the “Worst One”. Furthermore, a terrible threat awaits him: if he will not be able to improve and gain credits, he will have to repeat the same year. Although his situation is terrible, the situation changes when the new headmaster – Kurono Shinguji – offers him a new chance. In fact, she tells him that if he can win the “Seven Star Sword Festival”, he will be able to graduate in spite of everything. Problems arise when Ikki meets a new student, Stella Vermillion. She is a princess and a master at using magic and swords. Some circumstances put Ikki and Stella one against the other, with a promise: the one who lose will have to become the other's slave for the rest of their life! As for the similarities Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry shares with Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, the first, eye-catching one is that both anime involve a magic high school. Furthermore, both protagonists – Ikki and Tatsuya – despite their physical skills, are ranked the lowest in magic, but as low-ranked as they are, they don't care. Their only problem is the fact that they have to deal with the student considered as their polar opposite: strong, talented, skilled. What's more, both our protagonists have a strange relationship with their sisters, where their sisters are madly in love with their brothers. Another similarity is that Ikki, as much as Tatsuya, is despised by his entire family, except by Shizuku, his sister. Both storylines are amazing, and the character development is very well done, so much so that you feel like you're a part of it. It's not a stretch to say that Rakudai Kishi is the next step you should take after watching Mahouka Koukou!

2. Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (Legend of the Galactic Heroes)

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu dvd
[Information episodes=" 110 " aired=" January 1988 – March 1997 "]

The story takes place in a far away future, where mankind managed to colonize a large part in the universe. Since 150 years there's been a war between two factions: the Galactic Empire, headed by the Goldenbaum dinasty, and the Free Planets Alliance opposing it. The story revolves around two protagonists, Reinhard von Lohengramm, and Yang Wen-li. Reinhard is a young admiral in the Galactic Empire, who hates the emperor, and the Goldenbaum dinasty itself, so much so that he prefers the military environment. This skilled soldier will try to unlock the situation between the two factions, and overturn the emperor's power. Yang Wen-li, instead, is a commodore of the Free Planets Alliance, almost revered as a hero because of his military skills and deeds, but he is lazy and hates war. These two different men will deal with political struggles, subordinates and battles, and, in the end, they will manage to turn the tables and face the biggest war that will change their life forever. Although Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu has a military theme, it shares some important similarities with Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei. First of all, they both have a futuristic setting, and share a world deeply shaken by class struggles. In both, the sister's figure has an important role until the end, and the complex relationship both protagonists share with their sisters, is what define both of them later on. What's more, both these series explore political corruption, plots and the nature of politics itself. In both there are extremist groups, that are the starting point to explore the reasons why such groups exist and how they are created. Furthermore, we find in both a well-constructed and analyzed cast of characters, and both protagonists are well versed in politics, and due to some circumstances in the past, both bear a personal burden. These two anime are far away in time, but if you liked Mahouka Koukou, you will find Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu just as interesting!

3. Toaru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index)

toaru majutsu no index dcd

This story revolves around Touma Kamijou, a high school student in Academy City, a city where students train to develop their psychic abilities. Touma is your usual high school boy who tends to stay away from trouble, and is smart and easy-going. His only flaw is his esper ability: he has the lowest ranking. His only ability is the “Imagine Breaker”, a power that allows him to delete other's abilities. He couldn't care less about his low-ranked position, but the situation changes when he meets Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a strange girl who is chased after by a dangerous organization. Touma decides to protect her, and that's how the story enters its peak! Toaru Majutsu no Index and Mahouka Koukou share many similarities. Touma and Tatsuya are both characters with immense mental skills, and both are able to create solutions in complicated situations. Basically, they are overpowered compared to the rest of the characters, and yet they are low-ranked, but their condition doesn't affect them in the less. Both these anime feature science and magic, and they both have a school setting. Where Tatsuya fights to protect her sister, Touma fights to protect Index, who is as lovestruck for him as Miyuki is for her brother. We can say that, although Toaru Majutsu no Index has a comedy part as well, if you liked Mahouka Koukou, you have to give it a try!

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2014 – December 2014 "]

The story takes place in the Mihama Academy, which is defined to be an exclusive school, but is actually a seclusion school. Mihama Academy hosts peculiar students who are educated far from outer influences, and the story revolves around five girls, busy with their daily routines. Their lives change when they meet a new student, Yuuji Kazami, who is the first male in the group. It's exactly Yuuji's presence what starts to make things crumble in their life: he will gradually get to know each of them, and will discover their difficult pasts, forcing them to face their demons instead of looking away. Once again, in Grisaia no Kajitsu we find the overpowered protagonist theme, exactly as in Mahouka Koukou. Tatsuya and Yuuji are both cold, serious and incredibly skilled in fighting. They have a dark past, don't want to share it with others, and yet they try to help their friends all along the way. They both have a sister, who is considered to be better in their family than they are. Furthermore, in both these anime there's a harem of beautiful girls revolving around Tatsuya and Yuuji, but the ecchi component is absent, or better, is not taken to its extreme. Although Grisaia has a psychological and drama side with it, we can say for sure that if you liked Mahouka Koukou, you will find the atmosphere in Grisaia just as fascinating!

As you can probably guess from the title, Futari Ecchi is well, an ecchi! But it’s more than your average cliché display of softcore sex and questionable storyline. Instead, Futari Ecchi focuses not just on the sex, but on the relationship between newlyweds, Makoto and Yura. As newlyweds, sex is still a new, mysterious, and sometimes difficult part of their new lives together, and Futari Ecchi highlights the ups and downs of learning together in a light-hearted manner. While many ecchi anime have a school setting for a backdrop, Futari Ecchi focuses more on a mature relationship between adults, while not lacking in the comedy department, either. For those of you that are looking for something more similar to this more niche genre, or perhaps are a bit older or even a newlywed yourself, here are 6 Anime Like Futari Ecchi for you to check out! As the title suggests, 30-sai no Hoken Taiiku focuses on the story of a 30 year old man; a 30 year old virgin, to be exact. But before your mind immediately writes this off as being the same as the Hollywood film 40 Year Old Virgin, remember something very important – this is anime! So while it’s still a comedy, prepare yourself for fun, chibi art work, colourful displays, and fast-paced humour as two brother “Gods of Love” help Hayao Imagawa on his quest to finally have sex at age 30. What’s an ecchi without a girl though? So enter Natsu Andou, a 30 year old librarian, and also conveniently (or inconveniently), a virgin. But don’t worry; she also has two “Gods of Love” to help her along the way, though these two are sisters of course! Much like Futari Ecchi, the two main characters’ lack of sexual experience is treated in a light-hearted manner and a more mature setting than a typical high school adventure due to the character’s age and place in life, (i.e. having careers, their own homes, and very different experiences from life by the age of 30).

[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" Mar. 214 "]

Peeping Life: Shinkon-chan Kansai ni Irasshai is part of a larger series of typically one episode anime, all of which are meant to look into the daily life of normal Japanese people. At only one short episode long, Shinkon-chan is an easy, short, funny watch that makes a great accompaniment to your dinner. It gives a glimpse into the life of a newlywed couple who have just moved to Kansai, and the entire episode has the unique perspective of only taking place with the two having a chat in their living room on the sofa. Don’t expect a lot of action, but you can expect to have a few laughs from their conversation. Like Futari Ecchi, Shinkon-chan focuses on the interactions between a newlywed couple and the more mature relationship and dialogue that that entails. The two may not agree on everything, and have a few small arguments, but in the end, their relationship is still strong. If it’s more the depiction of a new relationship that interests you from Futari Ecchi, especially a more realistic depiction but still in a light-hearted manner, then try out Peeping Life: Shinkon-chan Kansai ni Irasshai! It won’t take you long and is sure to make you smile.

3. Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to The Animation (The Comic Artist and his Assistants) (2014)

Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to The Animation dvd
[sourceLink asin="B00J7IWFNG" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Aired: "]

Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to takes us in a new direction from the previously mentioned titles in our comparisons, but has its similarities with Futari Ecchi all the same. The story revolves around Yuuki Aito, a young manga-ka with a serious fetish for women’s undergarments, which happens to be the main subject of all of his manga. Meanwhile, Sahato Ashisu, Yuuki’s perhaps unfortunate assistant, is a more grounded and serious character, and she is left to deal with Yuuki’s, sometimes, outrageous antics and panty obsession. While it doesn’t have any newlyweds or much of a heartfelt relationship, what Mangaka-san to Assistant-san does have in common is their depictions of characters with inexperience in an actual relationship, and the awkwardness that can ensue from that. Yuuki and Sahato may not be married or even dating, but because of Yuuki’s inexperience with real women paired with his interest set, he uses his female assistant to try to learn more about sex and women. The result is a hilarious interaction between the characters that is vicariously awkward to be sure, but very amusing to watch. The dynamics of the relationship itself may be different from Futari Ecchi, but the humorous depiction of struggling to learn about one another and about sex is the same – not to mention some good ecchi sequences as well!

4. Virgin Night (2001)

Virgin Night dvd
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00005L89Y" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" Jun. 2001 "]

Back to a focus on one shot anime and we bring you Virgin Night! Don’t let this anime’s slightly older release date put you off immediately, it’s an old gem. At around 30 minutes long, it’s an easy watch and a quick fix to get another story with similar themes to Futari Ecchi. You might already have a few ideas of what this anime is about based from the title, and you are probably not far from the truth. Virgin Night is the story of Yuzuru and Azumi, and their first time taking their relationship to the next level. Like Makoto and Yura in Futari Ecchi, Yuzuru and Azumi have a long established and serious relationship. So finally taking the step towards having sex is a serious development for them, and there is a lot of meaning and feelings behind it rather than just lust or the backstory of a one-night stand. Specifically, Virgin Night and Futari Ecchi both highlight the first time experience between two lovers, and how it goes – both the ups, and the downs. If you loved the more mature and adult relationship in Futari Ecchi but were left wanting something a bit more intense on screen, check out Virgin Night. It’s a hentai, not just an ecchi, so it might be just what you’re looking for!

5. Kibun Kibun (2003)

Kibun Kibun dvd
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="DVD Image" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 2 " aired=" Feb. 2003 – May 2003 "]

Another older, but still great anime to check out if you loved Futari Ecchi is Kibun Kibun! Even the animation itself has aged very well. Like our previous entry Virgin Night, Kibun Kibun is a hentai, not an ecchi, so if you’re still looking for more, this is another anime to check out. Kibun Kibun is definitely a comedy, and shows the short story of an everyday couple’s relationship and life together with both the good times, and the more difficult times. Nami and Kenji’s relationship is fun and fresh, and while exaggerated in some ways, it remains believable for a young couple. Kibun Kibun has the same colourful, upbeat, and happy-go-lucky feel that Futari Ecchi has when watching it. You can’t help but smile as you see the relationship between Nami and Kenji unfold on the screen, and even when their inexperience sometimes makes situations awkward or borderline uncomfortable, the situation is always remedied with feel-good humour. Thus, the awkwardness and learning, and even the disagreements, that take place between the characters is treated in the same light as Futari Ecchi, where rather than dwelling on the bad, it quickly shifts back to being very positive with some well-placed, fast comedy. If you’re looking for a feel-good hentai about a positive relationship, Kibun Kibun is a great follow-up to Futari Ecchi!

6. Nana to Kaoru (Nana and Kaoru) (2011)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Manga Image" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" March 2011 "]

Finally, our last entry in our list of similar anime to Futari Ecchi is Nana to Kaoru. Originally a one-shot OVA and a manga, the popularity of this story has even seen it made into a live action film. Nana to Kaoru is about Kaoru, a boy with a fetish for S&M, and his childhood friend Nana, who ends up unexpectedly becoming interested in it as well. What starts out as an accident that is the result of Nana’s curiosity in Kaoru’s S&M equipment develops into a give and take relationship between the two characters. Together, they come to terms with what gives both of them pleasure sexually. Nana to Kaoru has a central theme of exploration. While Kaoru has always known what he was interested in, Nana is only beginning to come to terms with what she likes, and doing so by learning with Kaoru. Together, they explore the very different sexual world of S&M as friends and as lovers, learning what they like and don’t like along the way as well as more about one another. It may be done in a different way, but the theme of learning and exploring together is the same as Futari Ecchi. In the end, the characters’ relationships and knowledge about what they want sexually are both strengthened and deepened through experimentation together, so if that is what is intriguing to you in Futari Ecchi, try out the short ecchi Nana to Kaoru!

Conclusion

It’s hard to finish Futari Ecchi without a warm and fuzzy feeling inside of you, and a smile on your face at having been able to watch a little bit of Makoto and Yura’s new life together. Their relationship is strengthened through learning about sex together, and the comedy is not lost or at all overshadowed by the shenanigans that ensue – rather, it is highlighted by them! So if you find yourself looking for more ecchi or hentai that involves more mature relationships, newlyweds and first times, or sexual exploration and relationship building, then please check out some of the awesome anime and OVAs listed above! [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01AB8HHJW" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jul 2015 - Sep 2015 "]

Akagami no Shirayuki-Hime is our first recommendation because is one shoujo anime that, just like Shin Shirayuki-Hime Densetsu Prétear, is well received by shounen fans. Both anime series similarly based their storylines beyond the original well known tale of Snow White, developing their own saga around strong yet extremely kind girls, while following the same basic theme of good vs evil, and that love conquers all. In this story, recently adapted from an ongoing manga, the main character, a girl named Shirayuki (Snow White), is a herbalist with an unusual brilliant apple red hair. She never loses her smile and her gentleness towards others, and leads her life peacefully; until one day the prince of her land, Tanbarun, hears of her unusual hair color, and wants her as his concubine to enhance his reputation. Without relatives to lean on, Shirayuki develops a strong sense of self-reliance, so rather than giving herself to an empty life as a collectable object, she runs away, crossing paths with Zen, a prince in disguised; giving a start to her adventures. Even lacking in the magic transformation department, this anime series roots in your heart by its own right; and just like with Himeno and Hayate of Prétear, it makes you cheer for Shirayuki and Zen to get through their hardships and find happiness together.

[Information episodes=" 52 " aired=" Apr 1995 - Mar 1996 "]

This animated series, is one of the pieces that became a must watch in the genre of reverse harem. On the same line as Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Prétear, this magical adventure/romance tale, delivers bits of comedy as a relief for the surprisingly intense drama developed in the plot. This anime uses the same formula as Prétear of having 7 guardians to aid the heroine to fulfill her destiny, giving the reverse harem lovers a real treat. This anime, is also an adaptation of the popular manga of the same name, and refers to the adventures of a normal cheerful girl named Miaka Yūki, who is whisked away to an estrange world through a magical book. There she finds out that she has been chosen as the vassal of a mythical power that aims to reunite seven warriors, and with their help, summon the god that will defeat evil and bring peace to the land. Trapped in the middle of a conflict of epic proportions, Miaka meets his one true love, Tamahome, and in the midst of the trials that have to overcome, her feelings vacillate, because of the development in the relationship with her guardians, making us witness a heart wavering situation, which is the most attractive magnet of the series.

Now for our next anime recommendation, let’s introduce Harukanaru Toki no Naka de: Ajisai Yumegatari. This OVA of 2 episodes adapted from a popular manga, have a storyline quite similar to Prétear, with the particularity of bringing the development of the characters beyond the visual attractiveness, introducing in their backgrounds a feeling of uniqueness of personality. This quality that earned the franchise lots of followers, as has been portrayed in three OVAS, two TV series, one TV special, a movie, and at least 22 romance video games, (better known as otome games), and two live-action stage plays. Similar to Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Prétear, the plot of this story begins when a girl named Akane is summoned from her normal life and brought to a mystical place, in this case the land of Kyou; where she learns, is the possessor of the power that makes her the priestess of the dragon. With her new title, Akane receive the protection and aid of 8 guardians, and, in a situation very similar to one in Prétear, these guardians lend her their strengths to defeat Akuram; A demon who wishes to destroy the kingdom by absorbing human energy. The principal attraction of this anime, resides in the empathy that delivers, making you feel identified or even angry at one or another character in the development of the series, hence to say the big popularity of the title and the loyalty of the fans through the years.

Based on a visual novel, our next title, Hiiro no Kakera, retakes the formula of predecessors like Prétear, for a strong connection between two main characters, and the use of the powers of seven different nature elements, that each guardian brings to the fight to assist the protagonist in her battle against evil. This anime tells the story of Tamaki, a young girl that lives out her school days peacefully, until one day she learns that she inherited the duty as the Tamayori princess; a divine power that holds off the destruction of the world by keeping a seal on the magical sword Onikirimaru. As the plot evolves, Tamaki meets four boys, who as her guardians, have received the powers and abilities destined to assist her in the awakening of the power of the Tamayori princess. This anime, while is slow paced, has its merits, and just like in Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Prétear, shows us the struggle of self-discovery, a good romance were girl saves boy and love conquers all. And for those who have the patience to watch it through the end, this show has good battle scenes.

[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Dec 2014 "]

Last but not the least, for the final recommendation is Akatsuki no Yona, a great series based on the popular ongoing manga of the same name. Our young heroine Yona, is the only princess of the kingdom of kouka, as she leads a very sheltered life, her eyes were open wide when one day, out of the blue, Yona witness Soo-won (her fiancée) murder the king and steal the throne; and just when she is about to get murdered, her father´s aide and bodyguard, Hak, came to the rescue and help her escape. Initiating their quest for justice, and overcoming the betrayal of her former love, Yona came to discover her hidden powers as the true successor, sensing naturally a way to locate the long lost whereabouts of the former founders of the land, the four dragons. Out of her bubble, the princess came to truly understand the land she called home; and while they search for allies, Yona deepen her feelings for Hak. Just as in Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Prétear, this story also have a princess aided by seven supporters to fulfill a legend, just that in this case the goal is to help the protagonist to recover her rightful place as the heir of the kingdom. Also, like in Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Prétear, Akatsuki no Yona is fully charged with fan service, beginning with a powerful chemistry between the 2 main characters (Yona and Hak), adding a big plus with the bodyguard romance; and while they go on adventures in the search for dragons, this series ends up giving the fans a wide selection of cool boys with diverse personalities to root for. As the team of characters get closer, with each episode, the series always leave you with the subtle yearning for the heroine and his true love to end together.

[Information episodes=" 145 " aired=" Apr. 2005 – Mar. 2008 "]

Eyeshield 21 is a great place to start if you’re looking for an anime similar to Katekyo Hitman Reborn!. It tells the humorous story of Sena Kobayakawa, a high school boy considered by most in his class to be quite weak, and he is regularly picked on and terrorized. However, his ability to quickly get away from his pursuers catches the eye of the captain of the American football team, who ends up recruiting Sena as a secret, mystery player for the extremely important position of running back. Sena continues to prove he’s the fastest when he is scared and running away from things, just like before when he was being bullied instead of the secret star of the team! Hilarity ensues. One might be asking the question about how an anime focused on American football can have anything in common with an anime about the Mafia, but the similarities between the main characters and the themes of the story are very strong. Both Eyeshield 21 and Katekyo Hitman Reborn! feature a main character who is changed significantly from who he is at the start of the anime, and who he is at the end. While both begin as “weak” or even pathetic characters, through their experiences and with the help of their friends (or teammates!), they become strong! The road is long and hard and full of obstacles, but both anime tell the story of an underdog that goes on to find success, and both do so in a way that is funny and meaningful at the same time.

[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Jul. 2010 – Dec. 2010 "]

The story of Nurarihyon no Mago revolves around the main character Nura, who is no ordinary boy. In fact, while he is ¾ human, the last ¼ is Youkai (a Japanese supernatural monster). He lives in a house full of Youkai, and with a grandfather that hopes Nura will succeed him as head of the Nura Clan. However, Nura himself doesn’t want any of this at the start, and instead spends his time trying to help humans and doing good deeds in hopes that he will not become a full Youkai someday. As the anime progresses, Nura slowly begins to come to terms with his heritage, and starts to accept that he can indeed fulfil his grandfather’s dream even when initially he had no desire to. Tsuna is presented with a similar situation in Katekyo Hitman Reborn! when he is presented with the fate of taking over as head of Vongola Family. At first, he too rejects the idea, but as the story goes on he learns to accept it and to step into the shoes of those before him. Both anime tell the story of a boy who has to deal with a future that has been determined for him because of his heritage, and the path that they must take to grow from ordinary boys into powerful leaders.

Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi is the story of Kenichi Shirahama, a high school student who goes from being the constant victim of bullying, to vanquishing the bullies himself. As one can imagine, it is quite a turn-around to go from one end of the food chain to the other, and Kenichi doesn’t do it overnight through any superpowers or miracles. This anime focuses a lot on Kenichi’s training in martial arts at the dojo, Ryouzanpaku, alongside a girl named Miu, the granddaughter of the dojo master. Kenichi turns the tables on the bullies and delinquents, training hard to defeat and disband them and keeping them from making anyone else their victims. Much like Tsuna in Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, Kenichi is at first a very unassuming and physically weak character. But also like Tsuna, Kenichi works hard at his training to develop into a much stronger fighter that can not only handle himself, but can really take care of business. Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi is another anime for someone who was really interested in the underdog story of Katekyo Hitman Reborn! and wants to see the serious development of the main character from zero to hero. If you liked seeing that development in the form of fights and action sequences, then Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi is something you’ll definitely want to check out!

If you even like the concept of anime, then you have certainly heard your share of opinions on our next suggestion – One Piece. One of the most popular animes in Japan and abroad, One Piece is a story about adventure, excitement, humour, and friendship on the high seas! That’s right, it’s about pirates. The main character, Monkey D. Luffy, and his crew, The Straw Hat Pirates, search for the fabled “one piece” and the title of King of the Pirates. Of course, finding it isn’t simple, as over 700 episodes (and a new one still, every week) certainly prove! The cast of One Piece is absolutely massive, and full of original and unique protagonists and antagonists both. While not as big, Katekyo Hitman Reborn! also consists of many different characters, all of whom are very critical towards shaping who Tsuna becomes. In both anime, the main characters are developed a lot by their cast of both friends and enemies, and the influence of these other people is very important to the story. So if you are looking for not just a strong main character, but a strong supporting cast like in Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, maybe now is as good a time as any to sign on to the commitment of watching One Piece!

[sourceLink asin="B004J17HBG" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 60 " aired=" Jan. 2011 – Mar. 2012 "]

Beelzebub follows the story of Tatsumi Oga, and the strange “baby” Beel that he finds one day when he is in high school. However, Beel is no ordinary baby of course – in fact, he is the son of the demon king, and it is Tatsumi’s job to raise him! Throughout the anime, Tatsumi is faced with the challenges of raising a demon, albeit begrudgingly, as he finds himself in an official contract with Beel against his will. At first, Tatsumi does all he can to fight it, but slowly he begins to use the powers granted to him as Beel’s “father” to become a powerful fighter against gangs and other classmates. Beelzebub and Katekyo Hitman Reborn! have a very unique thing in common – the presence of a powerful figure in the form of a baby that becomes, in some way, the responsibility of the main character. In Beelzebub, the baby is the son of the demon king, as described in the aforementioned paragraph. In Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, the baby is a Mafia leader. Both pack a surprising character in an unsuspecting package to give the anime a unique twist, and both of these “babies” are able to grant the main character some level of supernatural power to help them in fights. So if supernaturally powerful babies – or at least unexpected and different characters than simply the norm – that make an anime truly stand out are your thing, then be sure to check out Beelzebub!

The definition of romance is - a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love. Now that you know this, you should also know that many fans of this series have experienced such excitement from this omnibus story-telling staple, known as Amagami SS. Here is what you should know. The journey that Junichi Tachibana takes is similar to the visual novel, which this anime is based off of. The video game was released on the PlayStation 2 in Japan on March 19 2009. It bears the same name and it follows an omnibus format, in which each of the six females Junichi meets will have their own storyline and arcs allotted to their own episodes. Like most romance anime, there is going to be ups and downs in the feelings department. There’ll be some main heroines you dislike rightfully, and there should be some that you take a liking to. It’s all a matter of taste but there should be enough there for everyone. At the conclusion of this anime you will hopefully have made a decision on who you would like Junichi to be with. For some, you might have concluded that within the first ten episodes. It’s an anime format that isn’t for everyone but for the ones that are searching for shows likes this one. Here are 6 anime that are similar to Amagami SS:

As you might have gathered from the title, this is about a mild-mannered teenager named Kazuya Maeda and his camera. As his uneventful summer break comes to an end he receives a gift. What he received was that aforementioned camera. The prospect of gaining that camera was intriguing to say the least for him because photography happens to be an interest of his. While in his possession he snaps a “trial” photo session with his younger sister Kanon. Needless to say, he wanted to continue photography within a school club. He receives a couple of offers from clubs. This is where things pick up and it would lead to some highly regarded decisions for young Kazuya. This anime fits in the same category as Amagami SS because of its romantic visual novel influence. The omnibus route it takes, as the audience tries to come up with their own choices on what female he should be with by its conclusion.

This visual novel was also made into an anime and its similarities are apparent to Amagami SS. They both highly rely on romantic match-making; however the difference is that in this case it’s a heroine meeting many different males. It’s a reverse harem if you will. The story is about this shy and clumsy heroine who awakens one morning, only to find that all her memories are gone. Amnesia is nothing to joke about, what a frightening situation to be in. All she has left are notes, numbers and names of people that she doesn’t recall ever adding to her phone. Oh and one other thing, a boy named Orion who shows up on the scene to assist her. With the guidance of this unknown character, she has to try and piece everything back together in her life. Needless to say, it’s not an enviable task. As the story progresses she starts to meet guys that she may or may not have had a past with. It ultimately leads to several different character arcs throughout the anime that might excite the viewers.

The feelings are real in this romantic short animation. It’s comprised of six episodes telling three different love stories. All are compelling stories and have a different tale to tell. The three couples were all bonded by love, but are played out quite differently. It’s sweet, sometimes funny and heart wrenching at times. The first story has Youji and Chiaki’s five-year relationship put into jeopardy from an announcement made by Youji. The next story involves childhood friends Aoi and Haruki, who come across new feelings from a triggered event. Lastly, Takumi meets this girl named Natsuko at a ski lift on the mountain in Nanto, and he develops feelings for her quickly. Clocking in at roughly seven minutes per episode it almost felt like an extra-long trailer. Sadly, it was such a short anime but the three stories did an exceptional job in that time frame. Whether or not you were affected by all three or just one of them, it left a strong impression on us.

Just like many of the others on this list, this also was based off a visual novel that was released in Japan on October 29, 2010 for PC. Koi Senkyo to Chocolate has the high school romance; it has the drama and the comedy that you come to expect from this style of anime. The main character Yuki Ojima you might say is a slacker. He joined the Food Research Club as a way to satisfy his extra-curricular activities. It’s far from the strains of other more active clubs and it enabled him to do as little as possible. All is well and good, until he finds out that a new candidate is running for student council president and she plans on abolishing the club. How does he combat that? Run against her, in a struggle to keep his precious club around. This has some of the makings of being yet another Amagami SS to a degree. There is a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor that goes along with this one. The main difference is the story arc doesn’t “reset” after the main character meets up with all the different ladies involved. It’s a fun-filled, romantic-comedy, which should get you on a number of levels.

Kono Aozora ni Yakusoki wo brings the heavy nature of the harem genre to the table. You can expect to see the usual suspects, from the comedy and romance genres as well. It’s based off the 2006 visual novel on the PC, which was later ported to the PS2 in 2007. The series starts off with the main character Wataru Hoshino waking up and finding an unknown female sleeping in nothing but her pink underwear, in his room no less. She wakes up only to punch him in the face and then escape out his window. What a great start to his day eh? We later find out that the girl goes by the name of Rinna Sawaki. She is a new transfer student who now lives in Wataru’s dormitory. One of the major companies on the island had an aviation cancellation which now leaves the four females Wataru is living with only a years’ time before they have to leave. Knowing this Rinna doesn’t want to be friends with them because of the inevitable separation they will encounter. Wataru, has other plans. The school romance and the comedy do share some parallels to Amagami SS.

This anime is the second one on our list that doesn’t get it source material from a visual novel; it comes straight from a manga. Keima Katsuragi is a self-proclaimed “God of Conquest” online with dating-sim games. He accepts a request to prove his title and worth by unknowing helping this demon from hell Elucia. He is now shackled to this demon via the deadly collar he’s wearing around his neck, he now has no choice but to help her return the evil spirits back to hell. How does he have to go about that you ask? Well, he now has to put all his gaming to the test against real-life females and “conquer” their hearts. Like in Amagami SS this story follows the omnibus pattern of following Keima’s adventure with one of the girls and then hitting the “reset button” and starting over with another adventure with a different lady. The romance and comedy are strong in this one and it comes complete with the entire ensemble of your prototypical cast of personalities. Those include such characters like the sporty one, the tsundere and an introvert to name a few. What differs in this anime is the added supernatural element that we haven’t seen much of on this list.

With the diversity of females offered in Amagami SS, there’s little to believe that you wouldn’t naturally gravitate to one of them. They all were so unique with different traits and personalities. Sae Nakata stuck out to us for her shy and well-developed physical nature. If you mix comedy and uneasy situations with some proper romance and sprinkle in some heartbreak, you will get a perfect concoction for all of these anime mentioned above. If that intrigues you, go ahead and give them a shot, you may find a gem amongst them. Please don’t hesitate to let us know if there were some omissions to this list or tell us which heroine from Amagami SS you liked the best in the comments section below.

[sourceLink asin="B0029Z8KCE" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Jul 2002 - Dec 2002 "]

As our first selection for you, is Samurai Deeper Kyo, an anime series that tells the story of Mibu Kyoshiro a normal looking man, that keeps a low profile, because he fights with himself to keep at bay “Onime-no-kyo” or “Demon eyes Kyo”, an assassin soul that sleeps within him, and have a price on his head for the murder of 1000 men. Just like Kenshin Himura in Samurai X, Mibu Kyoshiro from Samurai Deeper Kyo, share the same internal fight to overcome his past, leaving behind the skilled swordsman/killer that he once was, while trying to have a normal and pacific life. Another point in common, is that they both help a tenacious girl to reach her goals; Kenshin helps Kaoru to rebuild her martial arts school, and Kyoshiro ends up helping Yuuya to find her brother's killer. One of the strongest characteristic of this series, is the continuous internal confrontation of Kyoshiro, to maintain control of his own conscious being, because while Kenshin has his heart wavering between fighting or not under his own control; Mibu Kyoshiro has this struggle represented in two totally separate entities inside one body, each of them so different that are barely conscious one of another. If you are looking for an anime full with battle scenes, bits of comedy and supernatural powers, Samurai Deeper Kyo is a good option to continue in the mood of sword fighting action.

2. Mukou Hadan (Sword of the Stranger)

[Information episodes=" Movie " aired=" Apr 2007 "]

As a second recommendation, we bring you a classic tale of redemption, “Sword of the Stranger”, so don't miss out the chance to bring a snack and get comfortable in your favorite place, because this anime, 95 minutes long, will keep you in your seat for what it is, a good samurai movie. This animated movie, tell us the story of Kotarou, an orphan, and his faithful dog Tobimaru, and their daily struggle to survive, not just from hunger or the violence of the era in which they live, but from a mysterious Chinese organization that wants to capture Kotarou for their obscure purposes. Luckily for the boy and his dog, a Ronin called Nanashi, saved him from danger, and became his bodyguard in the journey they have to undertake, to try to keep the young Kotarou from harm. Sword of the stranger, shares with Rurouni Kenshin that, both main sword fighting characters are red-headed, which makes them stand out, and sometimes even, be mistreated for having foreign blood. Also, both anime leads share their struggle to overcome the past and the nightmares that haunts them; all the blood they spilled in the fights that made them infamous. Drifting without purpose, Kenshin Himura and Nanashi, both figuratively put away the sword, until fate reunites them with persons that, little by little, enter their hearts, and makes them worth defending until death, redeeming them. Rather than a romance, like in Samurai X, Sword of the Stranger, centers the human element of the story in a tale of friendship; and then, in a very straightforward way, fills everything else with action; leaving us with an anime without pretentions and easy to enjoy, because of the beautifully made battle scenes.

Developed in the Bakumatsu, the era where Kenshin Himura made his reputation as the “Battousai”, is where our next recommendation. Intrigue in the Bakumatsu: Irohanihoheto; an unusual anime series, that introduces a story based on facts about Japanese History; using supernatural elements as an allegory of how the thirst of power and political ambitions can ruin a nation. The plot of this series starts with Youjirou Akizuki, a stoic samurai, that, being tortured by his past failure to protect his mentor Sakamoto Ryōma, witnessing his death; pushes himself into the duty of destroy a powerful mystic artifact, that is manipulating the high spheres of power in Japan. As the bearer of the legendary sword, Getsuruitō (Moon Tear Sword), our young protagonist, gets involved in the struggle of the different factions that seek the control the country; and involuntarily, ends up in the middle of the revenge plot of the Yuyama Troupe, a wandering group of kabuki artists under the leadership of Kakunojo Yuyama. Intrigue in the Bakumatsu: Irohanihoheto, shares primarily two aspects with Rurouni Kenshin, first, the heart stirring encounters between two of the main characters Akizuki and Kakunojo, charged with chemistry and longing, just like the evolved relationship between Kaoru and Kenshin in the final season of Samurai X series. Second, the intensity of the action and choreographies of the fights, bringing the same feeling of excitement, in the encounters were the samurais and their katanas, level up to skilled firearms fighters, giving us an amazing spectacle of east versus west.

[Information episodes=" Short Film " aired=" Mar 2013 "]

If after number three of this list, you are still feeling the need for more action, we recommend you to refill your snacks and prepare for this great animated short film: Ryō Written with the Japanese kanji for “Dragon”, Ryō tell us a story based on the fictitious character, of a very young and extraordinarily skilled samurai, that served as an aide and bodyguard of Sakamoto Ryōma, one of the Japan's most famous and charismatic Historical figures. Using a war as a setting, this short animation superbly portraits the chaos at the end of the bakumatsu era, and by accompanying the young Ryo and Sakamoto Ryōma, we become subconsciously allies in his endeavors; giving us a frame that introduce us into the events that make possible the reintegration of Japan into the modern world. One detail worth mentioning about the movie, is the amazing landscapes, for example, the scenic view of the city of Nagasaki is really accurate; if you have the opportunity to see it for yourself someday, don't miss the chance to admire the panoramic view from Glover Garden facing the city port; it surely will make you evoke this anime. The trait that this short film shares with Samurai X the most, is not just the time period, but the way in which many complicated social situations and pieces of everyday life and history, are explained and delivered in a friendly way; intertwine them with excellent animated action scenes, and you have all in all, a good samurai film that makes you enjoy it's 25 minutes length and leave you with a nostalgic feeling so characteristic of the genre.

For number six, we bring to the pool of suggestions a lot of humor: Gintama, Silver soul; an anime series that lures you in with samurais and cool designed characters, and delivers hilarious situations in a Sci-Fi world where the old Japan meets outer space alien invasion. Gintama is a very popular series adapted from the renowned Shounen Jump Magazine’s manga of the same name; featuring Sakata Gintoki, an extraordinary skilled samurai that leads a very easy go looking life, and the adventures in which he ends up getting involved, while searching for an ends meet. Together with his companions: Kagura, Shinpachi Shimura and his loyal pet Sadaharu, these four friends always find a way to make a job request, a fun disaster that will make you laugh and enjoy every episode. Compared with Samurai X, Gintama shares, not just the samurai setting, but the fact that is one of the few anime series that entertains his audience with jokes that introduce them unsuspectingly, in real life history facts, or Japanese culture details; that’s why after 201 episodes, Gintama retains its freshness despite using time after time, it’s strong suit; the parody, reflecting what is going on in the urban fashions in Japan.

Starting out we’ve got a good old fashioned slice of life, Saki. Saki Miyanaga is your typical high school student, and by typical I mean a prodigy when it comes to Mahjong. Well, when you can control the flow of the game to get your score to equal zero every time. It’s safe to say she knows what she’s doing. However, for “Saki”, she actually hates the Mahjong due to childhood games with family. That all changes when she’s taken to her school’s mahjong club by a friend. Which begins to ignite Saki’s old passion. The similarities are near parallel for these two anime. We have main characters that don’t care for a tabletop game that, turns out, they could be labeled the best when they play. Not to mention both shows start out by going to a gathering spot where others come together and their respective games. No matter which of these two you start with, the other will be a great follow up and complement nicely.

Tag teaming is a strong strategy used in both Hikaru no Go and Kuroko no Basket. You see the characters develop in a manner that complements each other while honing their own skills. Already retaining skills of their own, it causes both teams of Hikaru/Sai and Kuroko/Kagami to rise through the ranks of their respective games. This is a great anime to watch if you like drama, suspense, and surprisingly action.

Let’s get back into some thrills and suspense. If you’re looking for a drama keeping you at the edge of your seat, then look no further. Because here’s Touhai Densetsu Akagi: Yami ni Maiorita Tensai. Shigeru Akagi, a boy trying to outrun the law, finds himself in a bit of trouble. Landing in a game parlor, Akagi is shifted into a game of Mahjong with some questionable people. After being placed in a situation of life or death he reveals that gambling is second nature to him. With no fear of death, what could he possibly have to lose, yet still have everything to gain? This does bring up an edgier side to tabletop gaming. However, the level of dedication and determination presented in Hikaru no Go and Touhai Densetsu Akagi: Yami ni Maiorita Tensai is admirable and well deserved. Though Hikaru isn’t running from the police, he is quite often found in situations where he is underestimated, much like Akagi. With this, they both prove themselves in-game as a force to be reckoned with.

Last, but not least, on our list is one of the highest grossing anime of all time. Topping off our list today is none other than Yu-Gi-Oh! This story goes from ancient Egypt, all the way to modern day. Yuugi Mutou receives a gift from his grandpa one day, and it’s an ancient puzzle. After assembling the pieces, the puzzle turns out to be a pyramid with strange powers. The spirit of the puzzle, Yami Yuugi, comes out and shares body and mind with Yuugi Mutou. Together they play the game of Duel Monsters to become the King of Games, and to unlock the mystery beyond this new alter ego. What were the similarities between these two anime again? An old object that has an ancient spirit dwelling within it that becomes one with the main characters? Perhaps that there is a game that encompasses their entire way of life? Maybe it’s that neither main character is any good at their respective games until their alter ego kicks in. We might be stretching it on this one. However, this anime is definitely one that has great twists and exciting plot points throughout the whole series.

Do you remember middle school? There was always that one kid in class who got into trouble. They would ditch class and often hang with their own little gang. Sometimes they’d put kids under their mercy and terrorize the teachers. This is Sana Kurata’s problem when she first arrives at her regular school. Kodomo no Omocha (known as Kodocha for short) follows her wild antics against the dandere leader of the class, Akito Hayama. Akito hates adults and would rather skip class than do anything else. Sana and Akito’s different personalities and ideals often clash, but over time, they learn to help each other out and make the lives of their family and friends much better. Friendships, drama, and over-the-top hilarity can also be found in these 6 anime. Check them out after reading this article! Similar Anime to Kodomo no Omocha / Child’s Toy

When Mikan Sakura finds out her best friend Hotaru is transferring to an elite school, she chooses to enroll with her. She finds out that this school teaches gifted students with special abilities called “Alices.” These abilities vary depending on the person and Mikan learns she possesses a rare Alice that cancels out a person’s Alice when they come near her. On her first day of school, she runs into local delinquent Natsume Hyuuga, who uses his Alice to take off her skirt after escaping from class. The two start off on a rocky relationship, but eventually become formidable partners in the school. Mikan shares some similar qualities with Sana. They’re both bright and cheery and have had rude first impressions with boys. Their wacky antics matched with their equally outgoing personalities set the tone for the anime’s wild slapstick comedy. Natsume has no respect for authority and, like Akito, has dedicated followers who admire his rebellious acts. Gakuen Alice incorporates more fantastical elements to its story. Nonetheless, it's the subtle drama involving many of Mikan’s friends that drives this series to success. The anime focuses on character development and the relationship between Mikan and Natsume. They both despise one another at first, but slowly grow to understand each other and eventually become a couple.

Kosaku adores the famous idol Yuka Kusakabe. He calls himself her biggest fan, sending her letters and collecting all her CDs, posters, and idol related memorabilia. When Yuka suddenly announces her retirement, Kosaku is devastated to the point of turning into hikikomori. He eventually returns to class, but is shocked to hear that Yuka has transferred into his school, under the name “Ringo.” Kosaku tries to learn why she enrolled in his school and deepens his relationship with her. Nourin takes place at an agricultural school - a setting totally different than the ones featured in this list. Despite this change, Nourin still keeps the wild spirit of Kodocha. It has a cast of uniquely rambunctious individuals that often get roped into weird situations. The humour also features many slapstick gags, sprinkled with a bit of parody. Ringo’s background as a Japanese idol is similar to Sana’s background as a child actress. However, while publicly she has a cheerful persona, this turns out to be a facade as she’s shown to have a dandere personality (with a hint of kuudere mixed in). Kosaku unknowingly changes Ringo to help her express her feelings for him. Overall, Nourin has flashes of drama, but is more focused on exploring the comedic everyday school life.

Kumiko “Yankumi” Yamaguchi is the granddaughter of a yakuza boss. Her parents died when she was young and her grandfather has been grooming her to be the heir of his empire. Kumiko, however, wants to become a teacher and, with her grandfather’s approval, lands a job at Shirokin Gakuen Private School. The catch is that she has to keep her Yakuza background private. Kumiko is put in charge of an all male class of delinquents that try to push her buttons. Nonetheless, she perseveres and eventually changes them to gain their respect. When your anime title is a parody on The Godfather, you know it means business. Kumiko’s tough attitude defines her role as an ideal teacher who takes no disrespect from students. Despite her hardlined personality, she’s got her own unique quirks that often lead to various comedic situations. Additionally, her relationship with the relaxed and level headed Shin Sawada begins mildly, but slowly develops into feelings of love like Sana and Akito. Having been a well known delinquent in the school, Shin is the most perceptive of Kumiko’s nature and utilizes his intellect to help her out later on. Kumiko tries to balance her reputable yakuza background and her public image as a teacher. Sana has the same dilemma when she attends a regular school while maintaining her career as a prolific child actress. Throughout their hectic lives, they still take the time to help those that are hurting and serve as inspirational characters in their own right. Gokusen is an overall goofy school comedy that takes its time to build characters and romances.

When she finally musters up the courage to confess her feelings to him, Naoki flat out rejects her because he hates dumb girls. Their fates would intertwine when Kotoko’s house is destroyed by a solitary earthquake and she and her Dad are forced to live with a friend of his. Little did she know that her Dad’s friend has a son, who turns out to be Naoki! Kotoko resembles a more grown up Sana and is more airheaded than the latter. As a result, he has a following of admirers and often makes fun of Kotoko’s intelligence. However, deep down he knows he secretly loves her. ItaKiss does this more quickly than Kodocha, as it shows Kotoko and Naoki’s rocky first encounter and the various circumstances that lead them to marriage

Miki Koishikawa’s life is turned upside down when her parents get a divorce and swap partners with a couple they met in Hawaii. While getting used to this ordeal, Miki meets the couple’s son, Yuu, who first appears as a jerk that constantly teases her. They eventually come to terms with their own differences and their new family, but their relationship gets complicated with run ins from old acquaintances. Marmalade Boy explores the dramatic tensions of families. The Kodocha formula here is pretty much the same: Miki meets a distant boy, they have some crazy interactions with one another, and they eventually fall in love. Marmalade Boy, however, takes more risks in its story. The partner swap involving the two main characters’ families is a touchy subject even for an anime. Although the story is more mature, Marmalade Boy still has Kodocha’s charm. Miki is your regular outgoing optimist who is often the victim of Yuu’s teases. Yuu is more outgoing than Akito, but he hides a resentful nature that stems from his relationship with his father. Marmalade Boy has its happy moments, but mixed in is a complex drama that involves a cast of friends and exes.

Satoshi Yabe’s new life as a teacher just got harder with the Marui triplets. Mitsuba is the eldest sister who’s a self proclaimed sadist and enjoys causing mischief. Futaba is the goofy oddball who’s very strong and athletic. Hitoha - the youngest sibling - is a quiet bookworm who secretly enjoys reading porn. Mitsudomoe follows the everyday life of these three girls, their class, and their unfortunate teacher. Mitsudomoe is the most perverted anime on this list. What it does have in common with Kodocha is its positive slice-of-life nature and downright outrageous characters. The anime relies on gags and comedic situations to move its story along. Although the Marui triplets cause a lot of chaos in their classroom, they genuinely care for each other and their close friends (most of the time). Mitsudomoe has its perverted humour, but also has sentimental moments worth grabbing some tissues for.

Guruguru mawaru Guruguru, mawaru Guruguru mawaru Guruguru, mawaru Guruguru mawaru Guruguru mawaru Guruguru mawaru Guruguru mawaru we here at Honey’s Anime are spinning and turning, spinning and turning especially after having a marathon viewing session of School Rumble. We are sure you too will have this catchy opening theme stuck in your head after the first episode (more so after binge watching the 52 episodes and two OVAs) of this wacky romantic comedy series that originally aired between 2004 and 2005. A brief synopsis of the story is it is (1) a comedy, (2) in a slice of life format with each episode broken up into two or three stories, and (3) it’s set in a high school. The plot centers around Tenma Tasukamoto, a genuinely cute sophomore girl; but Tenma has a problem, she is a total spaz. You see, the heroine has a crush on a boy in her class named Karasuma and simply cannot confess, communicate in semaphore, or talk to him in any way. We also have another complication; she isn’t the only character that gets completely spastic in front of the object of their affection. Kenji Harima, the school delinquent has a crush on (guess who?) Tenma. You can see how the hijinks will ensue as each hopeless hero attempts to confess to their love. We at Honey’s Anime have a list of six suggestions for you if you still need a crazy love comedy in your life after you finish up with Temna and her friends.

The story follows Misaki Ayuzawa, a student council president of a co-ed school that truly isn’t used to a female authority figure. The boys nicknamed Misaki the “Demon President” for her no-holds-barred philosophy for enforcing discipline. She could also be viewed as a man hater. You’ll find out she has well-founded trust issues when it comes to men. Her image is one of perfection in the classroom and at sports, oh and she is gorgeous. She has a secret though, her family is struggling. The house they live in is falling apart and every member of her family works just to pay the bills. Misaki is no exception; she gets the best job she can and does it to perfection, working at a Maid Café. We know, it’s shocking in a show with a title like Maid-Sama. The twist is that the most handsome boy at school, Takumi Usui, wanders into her café one day and uncovers her secret. The question is what will he do? Will he expose her? Will he blackmail her? Or just fall in love with this amazing, hardworking heroine? Maid-sama shares the common school life theme following a character through a combination of slice-of-life and romance adventures. The drama in Maid-sama is a little deeper than School Rumble; you care about the trouble in Misaki’s life.

[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Jan 8, 2002 to Jun 18, 2002 "]

The story centers around two characters, Kaname Chidori and Sousuke Sagara. Kaname is an exceptionally bright second-year high school girl with a gift. She is what is called “Whispered,” an individual who possesses an innate knowledge to build and operate amazing and powerful technology. She leads an ordinary high school life -- that is until she is secretly singled out as a Whispered candidate and becomes the target of terrorists hoping to capture her and use her skills for nefarious purposes. So she needs the protection of an agency called Mithril, and namely Sergeant Sousuke Sagara. The battle-hardened Sagara is forced to work undercover and becomes the classic “transfer student.” His plate fills up fast as he has to guard Kaname and his secret from classmates and terrorists. School Rumble and Full Metal Panic! are both set in your average high school, not one of those super elite schools for the uber-rich or one of those magical high schools where students are encouraged to fight each other like it’s ancient Sparta. The schools are just your basic high school with your average students, no super powers needed for admittance. The shows also have a similar slapstick humor, whether it is the outlandish behavior of the characters or the events around them. The use of guns and military hardware including giant robots is a little out of the ordinary, but outrageous humor still stands. The arrangement of the episodes is also similar, in many cases segmenting the story into slice-of-life arcs in each episode. The majority of the slapstick has to with the overreaction of Sousuke to the most benign situations and him leaping into action to “save” Kaname. Like School Rumble, the story boils down to an awkward relationship. While neither character in Full Metal Panic! starts off with a full-fledged confession, you understand that there will be a romantic connection the moment he threw her to the ground in the girls’ locker room and pointed a gun at the door to protect her.

Chiyo Sakura is one of the most adorable characters in years with her short stature and big polka dot bows. The plot follows Chiyo, who has fallen in love with Umetarou Nozaki a high school student roughly four times her size. A great thing about Chiyo is she makes her confession in episode one, or at least attempts to. She somehow instead of saying “I like you,” she says “I’m your biggest fan.” A statement like that would be weird to most guys, that is unless they are secretly a successful shoujo mangaka. A few miscommunications happen and she ends up as his assistant. We see some of the ways these stories are alike right off the bat; the heroine is totally in love and the protagonist doesn’t have a clue. You get to follow Chiyo as she gets involved in many ridiculous circumstances all as part of her life working with Nozaki. You find yourself rooting for this adorable little artist as she does her best to get the man she admires to notice her. The setting is also similar in that they are set in a high school. While School Rumble doesn’t dissect the high school experience that much, Nozaki does. You see how he sees the students he is enrolled with. A great similarity is the way you get to see her and in many ways see the inner thoughts and monologue of the heroine. The anime of School Rumble and Monthly Girls are both perfect if you are in the need for a good laugh at the awkward world of high school love.

[sourceLink asin="B003FRIUR0" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Apr 2, 2010 to Jun 18, 2010 "]

Yamada’s First Time focuses on Yamada, a 15-year-old high school girl, and a virgin, who wants sex. She doesn’t just want sex; her outrageous goal is to have 100 sex partners despite the fact that she is still a virgin. A chance encounter with a boy in a bookstore leads to her fixating on losing “it” to him. She doesn’t realize until later that he is a classmate of hers. You get to follow Yamada and her strange pursuit of Kosuda in vignettes. The similarities with School Rumble don’t stop at the fact that a lot of it takes place at a high school and it is about a high school girl. In both you get an inside look at the thoughts of a somewhat delusional main character as she navigates young love. We also get to watch the characters’ friends, like Chika Yamada (the younger sister) and Takeshita Miharu (the best friend), watch and comment on the hopelessness of the heroines. Yamada is absolutely not appropriate for all ages. But it is very, very funny. It’s a mad cap comedy with an outrageous main character as she bumbles her way toward love.

5. Nisekoi (Nisekoi: False Love)

dvd Nisekoi
[sourceLink asin="B00TH9YQS2" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 20 " aired=" Jan 11,2014 to May 24, 2014 "]

The plot of Nisekoi is a school romance based on absurdity and a love triangle that blossoms into that of a love quadrilateral later in the series. We start the story learning that Raku Ichijou, a first-year student, is the “heir apparent to a yakuza clan,” but is determined to follow the path of the straight and narrow. We also discover he has a crush on a girl named Onodera. He then gets kneed in the face by the new transfer student Chitoge Kirisaki, leading to a case of oil meets water. We’ve seen similar plots in Shakespeare; in this case it leads to a similar set up of these two being betrothed. Did we mention that Chitoge is a mob princess? We find the two of them have to at least bury the hatchet and hopefully not in each other, to avoid a mob war. The rest of this insane comedy is filled with slapstick; most of it at the expense of Raku. If you pay attention you’ll even see a callout to the classic arcade game Donkey Kong in the first episode. The pace of this series is excellent. You move from one segment to the other without getting too bogged down by overall story of a pending gangland war. We still get to see a character pining away for another girl as everything and anything gets in the way of them being together. We get to see a couple that can’t stand each other be forced to pretend to like each other. You don’t have the weird mental pictures from our character’s minds like you do in School Rumble, but you do get to hear their thoughts in many cases in small pauses between the action. Nisekoi has been one of the most popular anime in recent years and you’ve probably already watched it. The whole series is a great example of a romantic school comedy involving a great cast of supporting characters. Also, you can’t help but smile every time Chitoge says “darling.”

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Apr 12, 2009 to Jun 28, 2009 "]

The story (or should we say stories) of Hatsukoi Limited focuses on the first loves of several middle and high schoolers. The episodes tend to focus on a different character in each episode, giving you the chance to look in on the lives of these young people. You will definitely develop a favorite as the story progresses and the various threads are woven into complex plot. The relationship between Ayumi and Zaitsu is the first one you get to see, and the story of beast loves girl feels like it could have been one of the inspirations for “My Love Story.” The following story features Kei, your classic tsundere, and Kusuda and is one of the best plot arcs because of its depth. The cast of characters and the stories of finding true love are one of the elements that make Hatsukoi like School Rumble. The Ayumi and Zaitsu storyline is similar in several ways to Tenma and Harima. Zaitsu is considered a tough guy and easily scares everyone despite his truly gentle personality and his only objective is to be with the girl he fell in love with. The humor is great, but a lot lighter on the slapstick. While there is some slapstick, you just have to keep up with the dialogue for the best jokes. You do have to be patient with this series; its pace is a little slow, but the payoff is wonderfully sweet at the end. We can’t help but think this is one of the more underrated series out there. Yes, its art style is showing its age a little but get over it, the girls are still cute in their seifuku (sailor style school uniforms).

CLOSING

The anime above is really a short list and just scratches the surface in the romantic comedy category. We did our best to find school romantic comedies that didn’t involve the supernatural (and only failed on one occasion). We could have included even crazier comedies that involve those elements like Love tu Ru or the Familiar of Zero but decided to be a little more grounded. So take a peek at these more grounded romcoms that don’t need the super weird factor to make them stand out.

Stealth, precision, and secrecy are a few traits that make a good spy. What makes a great spy? The answer is natural born talent. This is something that Zwei has plenty of in Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom. Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom was an incredible anime. Filled with action and drama, the show kept you at the edge of your seat. That’s not all. Some of the best parts were about the mystery behind the characters like Zwei and his partner Ein as they complete their missions given to them from their company, Inferno. Let’s start off strong on this list with a hard core parallel to Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom. First on our list is Gungrave. Brandon Heat and Harry MacDowel, practically brothers, were nothing more than some thugs looking for a good time. Until, one day, they found themselves working for Big Daddy, leader of the mafia syndicate Millennion. Harry works his way up to replace Big Daddy as the leader of Millennion, with Brandon’s help. Through a disagreement, Harry ends up killing Brandon. However, the story doesn’t end there. Brandon comes back to life through the necrolization process, and uses his new life to take down the one who betrayed him, Harry. Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom and Gungrave have a good amount of similarities. Zwei and Brandon/Harry end up working for a giant syndicate where they take whatever job they are handed. Though this doesn’t last long, both Zwei and Brandon end up pointing their guns towards the organization's, Inferno and Millennion, that allowed them to hone their skills.

Sometimes a person isn't so susceptible to the life of a killer. That just makes their development more real. You can see this kind of development in our next pick in the line up, Black Lagoon. Rokurou Okajima is a former business man gone rogue. While delivering a package from his employer he gets captured and held for ransom by a group known as Black Lagoon. Turns out, Okajima’s company has no intentions of retrieving their employee. Instead, they decide to cover up their transaction by eliminating Okajima. Alone and betrayed, Okajima joins Black Lagoon and slowly trains himself to become a mercenary. In both Black Lagoon and Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom, we have formerly passive individuals, Zwei and Okajima. They begin their journey for a new life as killers, but on the way question what it is they are doing. While either finding or keeping their morality, Zwei and Okajima find that being a killer is more complicated than they could have imagined.

Just beyond the gate, where logic and reason mean nothing, Hei loses his humanity to gain supernatural powers. No longer human he becomes what is known as a Contractor. With these powers, he works for a company known as the Syndicate. His job, assassinate other Contractors Both of these anime’s have a mysterious main character, Hei and Zwei, that have particular skills in assassination. These two characters work for a powerful underground organization, Syndicate and Inferno, that pick their targets. The ultimate similarity is the usage of masks in the shows. Similar in style and use as an alias, these masks give a similar feel to each anime in a very detailed way.

So far we’ve seen what it’s like to be forced into this lifestyle of assassins and mercenaries. Let’s take a look at some individuals that chose this life style and know how to handle a job. Next up we are taking a look at Gangsta.. Nicholas Brown and Worick Arcangelo are known as the “Handymen”. In the city of Ergastalum, they are seen as being the only neutral party in a city that’s split four ways between different syndicates. Nic and Worick are guns for hire to take on any job by the mob, or even the police. An underground organization rises up to tip the balance of Ergastalum by hunting down Twilights, people who have super-human abilities from a drug. Nic and Worick keep their guns ready to defend the head’s of the syndicates, known as the Four Fathers, and figure out why Twilights are being targeted. Well, let’s see. We’ve got Gangsta. in one hand, and Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom in the other. Both have a two man team, Nic/Worick and Ein/Zwei, of mercenaries or assassins. There’s also the organizations they get hired by to kill targets, The mob and Inferno. These anime’s even have one of the team members having some sort of above human ability, Nic and Zwei. These shows compliment each other by showing two sides of a similar life style. Either show is a great follow up for the other.

Being an assassin is a tough job, you would think. How hard can it be if a little girl can do it? Take a look into the world of Gunslinger Girl. This story follows the viewpoints of five little girls, Angelica, Claes, Henrietta, Rico, and Triela. Given a second chance at life by the Italian government, these girls are brainwashed and are only filled with knowledge and skills for assassination. However, they are still little girls. These five girls struggle with their emotions as they carry out their missions and seek recognition from the ones they love. Gunslinger Girl and Phantom: Requiem for the phantom are really similar in theme and execution. Angelica, Claes, Henrietta, Rico, and Triela are brought into an organization and lose their memories, much like Zwei did. These five girls and Zwei aren’t a cookie cutter image of what an assassin should be. All of them have questions and emotions that guide them to form an opinion on why is it they do what they do.

After meeting, Kirika and Mireille team up to discover both of their pasts. During their journey, they have to fight off the organization known as Les Soldats. Which was an organization mean for doing good, but now they’re nothing more than the evil they once swore to defeat. Where to begin the comparisons? Much like in Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom, Noir has a two person assassination team, Mireille and Kirika. These two teams of Ein/Zwei and Mireille/Kirika have to fight against a large criminal organization, Inferno and Les Soldats. Zwei and Kirika have no idea who they are, but have exceptional talent in assassination. Along these lines, Zwei and Kirika also question their own reality. Zwei wonders why they are killing for Inferno, and Kirika wonders why her life is consumed by lies.

[sourceLink asin="B00019JQPK" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Ahh Marmalade boy, if you were old enough to remember this drama-filled romance back in the mid-nineties then this has probably affected you in some way. This anime has no shortage of drama, romance and comedy. The whole concept of having parents swapping spouses with another family has drama written all over it. Not to mention Miki and Yuu’s other prospects in regards to dating, which get introduced throughout the show. Although it’s targeted as a Shoujo anime, Marmalade Boy certainly has enough to offer up for the male demographic as well. Here’s a list of 6 anime that has striking similarities.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Similar Anime to Marmalade Boy

1. Itazura na Kiss

[sourceLink asin="B00178XEJI" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Apr. 2008 – Sep. 2008 "]

A clumsy and bothersome third-year high school student named Kotoko Aihara develops a crush on a fellow high school student Naoki Irie. The problem with this scenario is that Naoki isn’t interested in “stupid girls” which initially he feels she is. Just like in Marmalade Boy, the male main characters are originally cold to their female counterpart. With that being said, Naoki proceeds to shun Kotoko away, much to her dismay. Shortly thereafter, an earthquake hits Tokyo and it levels Kotoko’s house leaving her in a rather unfortunate situation. Due to a bittersweet twist of fate, Kotoko finds herself living in the same house as her love interest, Naoki. She believes with this opportunity given to her that she will be able to win him over and show what she has to offer. Itazura na Kiss is a very sweet romantic anime that tugs on your heartstring. It offers up some of the same situations that Marmalade Boy offers. Such as, the love interest living in the same house and the main character’s ability to cope and change throughout the course of the anime.

This anime also features a heavy love triangle scenario complete with all the drama you would come to expect from that given situation. The main female protagonist Tsukushi, is comparable to Miki, in that, they’re both outspoken individuals and have a similar physical look to them. This anime goes through the trials and mistakes that youths make while in love. Tsukushi Makino comes from a poor family thus she learns to be very frugal with her choices. She doesn’t tolerate bullies and she will let them know when they are out of line. All she wants to do is get through her final two years of high school, but things won’t be that easy for her. One day her friend gets into a sticky situation accidently and ends up getting picked on by the leader of the Flower Four clique, Tsukasa Domyoji. The F4 group consists of rich friends who have known each other since childhood. They also have no problem in bullying the less fortunate. After that incident when Tsukushi stuck up for her friend she received a red card in her locker. It was the F4 letting her know that she is to become a target and it wasn’t appreciated what she did. From then on, Tsukushi was determined to make sure her morals would not be overthrown by this clique. The one thing she did not anticipate was developing feelings for one of the F4 members in the process. Although grittier in the animation department, this show is very comparable.

3. Peach Girl

Peach Girl dvd
[sourceLink asin="B000MR9D2M" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Apr. 2005 – Jun. 2005 "]

Peach Girl, as the title suggests, is about an average high school girl who is labeled as “beach bunny” because she has such tanned skin, hence the “peach”. With that riding on her back she hears that the boy she likes, Toji, doesn’t like tanned females. There’s a dilemma right there for the young Momo Adachi as she struggles to remake herself into something that she believes he likes. What’s interesting to note, while in the process of trying to win over Toji, she starts to take a liking into another boy named Kairi. The story continues as Momo becomes confused as to which boy she would like to date. Throw in a childhood friend who also likes Toji and you have a recipe for drama. This anime was well done at portraying what teenagers can go through just for the sake of love. This resonates with Marmalade Boy because it shares that romantic love triangle of being indecisive and excited at the possibility of snagging that elusive boy.

Bokura ga Ita dvd
[sourceLink asin="B00BHUZPR0" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Jul. 2006 – Dec. 2006 "]

Bokura ga Ita, is a love story about an innocent baby faced teenager by the name of Nanami Takahashi. She aspires to make many new friends on her first day of high school. She meets this handsome boy by the name of Yano Motoharu, who is beloved by nearly every female in that school. Right away Nanami knows she is in for a challenge to win his affection. The similarities to Marmalade Boy start to creep up as the anime moves along, however there are certain instances that jump out at you right away. For example, the main female characters from Marmalade Boy and Bokura ga Ita are both innocent and are absent-minded at times, leaving them in unenviable situations. Yano can also be hurtful to Nanami when he pushes her away. Lastly, they both take place in a school environment with other characters interfering with what seems to be destiny for the main two. Just like Marmalade Boy, there is also a haunting secret from the male protagonist that later is revealed and plays a big part in the development of their respected relationships. There are laughs and uncomfortable situations in this anime. I feel it does bring a serious tone when called upon and it has sexual references throughout, as to be expected in some romance series.

Futaba Yoshioka was at her peak in popularity in middle-school. She was well received from boys but it didn’t carry over too well to the girls and she was often snubbed because of it. It didn’t matter to her however, as the only opinion that did matter was of a classmate named Kou Tanaka. They had shared some precious memories together and then all of a sudden, a misunderstanding and a disappearance from Kou turned everything upside down for Futaba. Now in high school, Futaba is determined to not have history repeat itself as she takes a different approach to make new friends. It all seems to be going smoothly, until one day the former love of hers reappears complete with a new last name and other changes. Although it has a different start to the anime, it later has the same traits that Marmalade Boy expressed throughout. One of those character traits is Futaba being passionate and caring. Like all of these anime on this list up to this point, they take part in a school setting and involve teenage exploration of love and rejection. The characters will deal with confusion, indecision and heartbreak along the way. There will be unwanted scenarios from other boys and girls that figure into this plot. The story felt real and true to itself.

Tohru Honda, is a 16-year-old girl who found herself living in a tent by herself after the untimely passing of both her parents. Yuki, a handsome boy, and his cousin Shigure, found poor Tohru living on their property and invited her to live with them after a recent landslide destroyed her tent. This instantly reminded us of the living situation in Marmalade Boy, with the lead female living with a potential love interest. Little did sweet Tohru know that these males she is living with have a family curse that the inhabitants have inherited. Now with her interest in Yuki, she has to be careful with her advancements otherwise she might end up having Yuki transform into a beast from a Chinese Zodiac. All it takes is one hug for the bizarre situations to be created, and bizarre they are. The lead female has similar characteristics to Miki that include being sweet, cheerful and loving. Yes, there is teenage love and drama, but it doesn’t rely on the school setting and it mixes in some fantasy elements, which is a pleasant change. It’s probably the most unique on this list but it still supports some of the likeness from Marmalade Boy. It’s quirky, It’s different, use whatever adjective to describe it, it’s worth a shot.

Final Thoughts

From this list, there should be enough drama to shake a stick at. The list doesn’t hold back from these similar themes of love and adaptability from the issues that arise throughout. If you’re a big fan of romance with some rather interesting concepts that are drama-filled to the core, you’re in luck. Throw in some comic relief in there to alleviate the excessive drama that occasionally got to be a little much. However you decide to look at this list of anime, we hope you take the time to check these out and find some to your liking. We would love to hear your thoughts on this list. 6 Anime like Suzuka [Recommendations]

Suzuka dvd
[sourceLink asin="B003CP62CU" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

At first glance, the anime Suzuka looks like it might be your average sports anime. We know that sports are filled with triumph, tragedy, excitement and drama. The best parts of real-world sporting events are the amazing stories of underdogs, the comebacks, and the unlikely heroes. Suzuka’s story has all those elements, and sport is merely a backdrop to this romance drama. The 26-episode anime focuses on Yamato Akitsuki, a young man who moves from the country to Tokyo for high school. Young Yamato moves in with his aunt and his cousin who operate a women’s public bath and apartment building. You get the feeling that this is going to turn into your classic harem comedy with plenty of “lucky pervert” opportunities. One day Yamato sees a girl on the school track practicing the high jump. He is immediately transfixed by her beauty and is shocked to find out that the girl, Suzuka, is living in the apartment next door. You get to experience the life of a boy many consider a goof and unreliable as he attempts to win the object of his affection. The drama isn’t completely focused on Yamato; we get the chance to watch one girl fight to earn and keep the love of her long-term crush. The viewer also gets to watch another girl wrestle with her emotions as she tries to come to terms with a tragedy in her past. The following are six anime that follow similar themes as Suzuka.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

1. Ao Haru Ride (Blue Spring Ride)

ao-haru-ride-DVD
[sourceLink asin="B00LHUP516" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2014 - Sep. 2014 "]

Blue Spring Ride is focused on Futaba, a beautiful high school girl who changed her life and personality after being ostracized by the girls in her middle school class. She tossed away the girly ways she was known for and embraced a louder, brasher version of herself in an effort to gain friends. The romance in this story starts several years before her reinvention. Like so many other stories that deal with young love, it starts with a chance encounter on a rainy day. Young Futuba and young Tanaka both take shelter from a storm under the eaves of a shrine. We don’t get to see much of their early relationship, but young Tanaka’s transfer to a new school is one of the catalysts for her change to the brash girl. The first twist comes when the older Futuba and the older Tanaka, now called Mabuchi due to the divorce of his parents, meet again in high school. The viewer as well as our heroine immediately wonders “Can you turn back time?” Blue Spring Ride has its comedic moments, but isn’t what we would call a romcom. We really think it is best defined as a shoujo school romance with some slice-of-life elements. The more specific way it’s similar to Suzuka is the pacing. The story doesn’t take off at a sprinter’s pace; it takes a while to develop. We also watch Futaba and Yamato -- both considered to be sloppy, unreliable and fun to be around -- chase after cool and distant love interests. You get see the experiences of the hero and heroine of their respective stories examine their lives and consider what the changes in their lives (for Yamato joining the track team and Futuba becoming less girly) got them if it doesn’t get them the romantic partner they desire.

Mashiro-iro Symphony dvd
[sourceLink asin="B009AVC9MC" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Oct . 2011 - Dec. 2011 "]

Our protagonist is Shingo Uryuu, a second-year student at Kagamidai Private Academy. The Academy is about to be integrated into Yuihime Girls School. Shingo is part of the first class of boys ever to attend the old all girls’ school. We quickly see that not all the “little princesses” at the school are open and accepting of the change. The story revolves around Shingo as he makes friends at school and in the Neko Club, a club dedicated to taking care of stray animals. You get a lot of harem elements in Mashiro-iro Symphony as it centers on a guy attending a girls school and it doesn’t take long for Shingo to collect quite a few friends who all happen to be female. We also see quite a few ecchi moments in the beginning as boys, mainly Shingo, adjust to a world where a girl’s privacy had never before been in question. The romance elements develop slowly, much like in Suzuka. You also get a big hint about Shingo’s main love interest in the very beginning he spots a 3rd year girl named Amaha Miu playing with a rather strange looking cat in the grass near one of the classrooms. Their tale is sweet; we watch them slowly warm up to each other. We think the biggest connection Susuka and Mashiro-iro Symphony share is their ability to take the classic trope of the transfer student and look at the difficulties of trying to fit in to a new environment and make new friends. In Suzuka’s case, Yamato joins the track and field team; in Mashiro-iro Symphony’s case, Shingo’s attempts to melt the icy heart of the school director’s daughter, Airi Sena, who opposes the integration of schools.

Eita Kidou is a smart guy on a mission. He plans to devote his life to medicine and, after his parents decide to split up, he decides that love and romance are just nuisances, too. We also know, however, that this is a romance and the protagonist is bound to change his mind on the subject of love. The cool, somewhat aloof role is played by two characters in this drama. The protagonist, Eita, and the prettiest girl in school, Masuzu, both play it cool even though it is all a lie. In a way the story is an anti-version of Suzuka, where there is a confession by the cool beauty, an initial rejection by the nice guy and – eventually – a contentious dating relationship. The most significant similarity to Suzuka is the way Eita’s childhood friend Chiwa does everything she can think of to be popular with guys, changing the way she looks and the way she acts all to get him to notice her as more than a next door neighbor. The story may not be filled with the angst-ridden teen drama of Suzuka, but the romance and the love triangle involving the protagonist, a childhood friend and a school beauty who can be quite mean-spirited is all there in this harem romcom.

The Kawai Complex

Kazunari Usa is a high school freshmen who has the amazing opportunity to live on his own after his parents’ jobs are transferred. The young man takes up residence as the Kawai Complex, a boarding house filled with a rather interesting cast of characters. The rooms host the likes of masochistic Shirosaki, a beautiful Mayumi who is hopeless with men; a college girl named Sayaka; and cool and aloof Ritsu, the Senpai whose attention he’s trying to attract. Kawai Complex offers a bit more slapstick than Suzuka, but it at its heart has a few real similarities. The most obvious is the parallel of a young high school boy living on his own in an apartment. The second major similarity is the protagonist living in the same complex as his love interest. The two also often have meals together since meals are part of the boarding house benefits. A final similarity is that the beautiful object of the protagonist’s affections, Ritsu Kawai, is shy, cool and often alone when she is not at school.

The story starts with a confession two years in the making, a rejection, and an earthquake that levels our main character’s brand new house. It’s just the beginning of the misfortune for Kotoko Aihara, who soon finds herself moving in with the boy, Naoki Irie, who just rejected her. The disasters would break most people, but not Kotoko. She soldiers on and, like a great heroine, finds a spark of hope and decides there is a chance for her with Naoki Irie. The theme that makes Itazura na Kiss similar to Suzuka is the idea of transformation. Kotoko and Naoki both evolve and change in the course of the story. That’s what good characters do, especially over the incredibly long story arch in this anime. We watch Yamato and Kotoko both use their significant others as catalysts and attempt to change themselves. For Yamato it’s committing himself to track and field. For Kotoko it’s deciding to become a nurse. A simple similarity is both Yamato and Kotoko are looked down on by their love interests for not measuring up to the standards that they, Naoki and Suzuka, set for themselves.

Haruto Kirishima leads an uncomplicated life in his small town in the country. He goes to school. He is a member of the cooking club. He even has a girl he likes. He then has his world turned upside down when a girl named Yuzuki Eba comes to live with him. She doesn’t take too long to confess her love to him, complicating his life as he still tries to win the love of another girl, Nanami Kanzaki. The set-up is very similar to Suzuka. You have a character that moves in from out of town, in this case Yuzuki and in the former Yamato. You have the new character, Yuzuki or Yamato, living under the same roof as their love interests. You also have a very early confession, so like Suzuka, Haruto knows that despite the agreement to just be friends they are still the object of unwanted affection.

Conclusion

Suzuka brings a lot to the table as a romance. The viewer gets all the excitement of a sports anime without it overwhelming the subtleness of the human drama. Those with track and field experience may cringe a little at the animation of Suzuka’s high jump, but we can push past it as the real story is about the relationships and the lengths we go to to change how others see us. You do get some stand-out characters like Suzaka’s best friend Miki Hashiba and her moments of advice to her friends as she tries to help smooth over rough patches in their relationships. You also get some under-used characters like Miho, Yamato’s twin-tail wearing middle school cousin. Miho loves her cousin even though her opinion of him as a man might not be very high at times. It would have been nice if that relationship had been explored more, if only for comic relief. The story is subtle, just like the role of track and field as a plot device. If you want a drama and not a typical teen romcom, the bar is set high by Suzuka.
